Plates/dinnerware question

Jul 02, 2010 18:04

So when I moved out of my parents' house, my mom bought me some really cheap plastic plates from Walmart. Well, it's been 4 years now, and they are showing their age. Between just being pretty cheap plates, I've also used them as cutting boards since I didn't have one. I'm looking to replace them, and I want to get "real" plates, the kind that clink against each other. Don't ask me why that's the definition of "real" plates in my head, it just is. The thing is, I don't have the faintest clue what to look for in plates or dinnerware sets.

I am looking for simplicity, mostly. I don't care for fancy patterns or name-brand stuff. I'm willing to spend more money if it means more quality/durability, but I would like to keep cost down if possible. I want plates that I can throw in the dishwasher or microwave with no problems. A cursory poke at Amazon found these that I kind of like, but I have no idea how to tell if they are good or not.

What are good things to look for in dinnerware? Are there brands to look for, or to avoid? Is there a functional difference between different materials?

Basically, can anyone help a gal out?

(And yes, I'll be buying cutting boards, too, some of those flexible plastic or silicone ones.)
