So I was looking through that survey, and I noticed that a lot of people had... interesting professions. I'd like to get to know my neighbors too, so tell me about your job, or whatever it is you do! If you're a student, what do you want to do when when you're finished with school ( Read more... )

[Did he said he's a programmer?] How much programming experience do you have?

It's been about seven years since I started learning.

I see... [Pauses.] Well, I'm a singing android, that's my profession.

A programmer? And the internet? [Have a confused person from a world that lacks computers. Atsuro probably will get a lot of that.]

I'm just a mercenary. I've fought in two wars in my world now to stop a few greedy people who just wanted power from having their way.

[You have no idea.] Basically, a programmer is someone who writes instructions for computers, machines that follow directions. You put the instructions in, and if you did it right, the computer will do what you tell it to. And the internet is kind of like our journal network, but also a really vast library. It's a network you access from computers that lets people do things like talk to each other from far away or find information on any topic they want.

Lucky the good guys hired you first, huh?

[He laughs a bit at that last one.] It's easy to tell who the good guys are. They want to pay you more but can't.

But actually, the most recent person who hired us was someone we knew.

So this internet thing is like the journals and the library combined? Interesting...

Haha. If only it were always that simple.

Sort of like that, yes; at its most basic level. It's kind of hard to explain it further though, because it's so vast in scope. People meet there, you can use it to find people with the same interests as you, you can use it to find jobs or places to live, you can sell or buy things... it's the greatest mainstream invention humanity has come up with in a long time. I feel kind of cut off here without it.

A programmer? What do you programme?

I'm a Bishop.

Whatever Naoya says I should try, or whatever seems like fun. Like I said, I don't really have much of a specialty yet.

A holy man?

Is Naoya your boss?

Yes, we work for God and protect his flock.

My mentor. I'm lucky to be his apprentice, he's the smartest programmer alive.

...Ah. You'll have to excuse me. I haven't exactly been on good terms with angels lately.

Wow. And I thought I was being versatile. That's really impressive. Do you get paid for all four of those?

I'm programmed to sing and perform for people and our fans.

[And since it's been a while since they last spoke, he adds:] Thank you again for helping me when I was malfunctioning. I'm glad I don't have to worry about it anymore!

No problem! I'm glad I could help.

...Do you ever wish that you were programmed differently? Not that there's anything wrong with enjoying singing for people, I'm just curious.

[...wasn't this like what Luka was talking about? He pauses before he answers truthfully.]

I don't know. That's what I was programmed to do, so that's all I can think of doing.

Interesting. I'm asking because in lots of fiction, robots or androids with fixed programming often develop a form of free will through artificial intelligence, so I was wondering if you'd ever felt like that.

...Not that you're fictional. And it must be a pain putting up with all my nerdy questions, haha.
