Brilliant! I'm actually very glad to know that there are talented authors capable of writing short fics that don't have to include physical consummation to convey such a strong relationship.

I love Jack and Maturin's relationship in the sense that their either very good friends mistaken as lovers, or lovers mistaken as very good friends, and we're just left to guess.

And so I'm just going to say it again: This was brilliant! ^_^

Thank you! I do think there's a lovely ambiguity in the film at least, far more obvious than in a lot of movies where I feel like people are really straining to see subtext; it is very obvious that these men love each other, though whether one can fairly extrapolate physical love from that is a different issue.

Now I am getting scared that if I give in and write mindless, plotless Jack/Stephen smut, everyone will lose all respect for me. *g*

If I swear I've never had any respect for you, will go give in and write the smut? Oh, wait.

::heads over to Reverie::

*happy sigh*

In fact, the smut's so good I'm going to slander you to everyone I meet and drag your reputation through the on-line mud. See? Who needs respect? You've got our attention, which lasts much longer!

ladyvyola of "Trios"? Wow, it's been forever! Ahh I remember Voyager fandom fondly. How neat to see you here! Thanks so much -- and feel free to slander my reputation, it's not like I'm clinging to much of one anyway. *G*

This was absolutely lovely. It was not impersonal, and yet it was not the sopping, weepy stories I always seem to be running across. And I like the idea that it was only for Stephen's comfort to have Jack there while he operated on himself-sneaky devil. The language you used in this was faboo, also, walking that fine line between stiff, out-of-period language and loose and modern, either of which would have thrown the whole thing off.

By the by, the reason I'm reviewing this so late is that I heard it was good and I was saving it to read as a reward for a project I was working on. So I'm glad it was worth it! :D

Thanks so much (and no worry on late reviews, I am awful at timely feedback). The language was what I was most worried about because I haven't read much of the books and I'm never sure which contractions were in common usage in which century.

Sopping, weepy stories? I haven't found those. (And am having a perverse desire to see one!)

Ah, wonderful! Ever since seeing the movie I've been desparate for Jack/Stephen fic. This was really sweet and lovely. I hope you'll write more soon.

Thanks so much! I was so desperate for fic that, not finding enough, I *had* to write it. *g* Hope you will too!

"I wish I could play with you," Stephen said softly

Oh! This was so good, I think it needs to be in the Extended Edition. *g*

I hope a sequel is coming. One where Stephen is well enough to play with Jack. *weg*

Hee! EE! Thank you so much. Am really hoping there are deleted scenes on the DVD, as I understand they cut a lot of music!

Re: sequel: yes, they're coming. I mean, it's coming. Err. You know what I mean!

"Tell me what else you would have me do," whispered Jack Aubrey.

Bring on da boyz, bring on da slash!!!!!

Seriously, though, this was a wonderfully tender story, with some gently mischievous lines ripe for the re-interpreting. :-)

he was surprised to see tears glittering in his friend's eyes before the captain blinked them back and straightened, every inch Lucky Jack again.

I liked the way you evoked Jack's ability to switch between the open, unguarded self he's only free to be when he's with Stephen, and his official persona that he must assume with the men - and behind which he sometimes hides, even with Stephen. Very nice touch.

I'm wondering about Stephen's wound, and whether it would *ever* heal if it had in fact already infected, but that's probably a question for the wonderful medical!bitches on something like the EFic list. Anyway, it didn't detract from my enjoyment of the story.

Ahh, I love this review! There were so many lines in the movie that I felt like were gifts to slash fans -- "You're the predator," "Would you call me an aged man of war" -- that I could not resist. But tender was what I was aiming for. There were also a couple of interesting moments where they addressed one another by title rather than name which I thought were very telling.

I don't know anything about abdominal infection but I do know that most deep wounds can stink even if they're not infected. *G* Will let the canon police tell me!

Oh, I adore the quote on your icon!
"You debauched my sloth!" gets used around our house whenever someone gets unusually indignant. Or ridiculous.
