I'm currently into this pairing, too. As for age, well, I figure age is slow in Soul Society. We know that Rukia is fairly "old", given she was adopted into the Kukichi house, what, 50 years from the time of the Soul Society arc?
And there's evidence of aging. You can tell Yachiru has aged. There are images of Kyouraku and Ukitake as youngsters and they've aged. So, they age, just very slowly.
My take is that Hitsugaya is younger, yes, but he isn't as young as he actually looks. But hey, in Soul Society terms, 50s and 60s could very well be equivalent to teenage years. ;)
