"See you again in thirteen hours!"

(Slight notice: I've written or started to write around 3 entries about different Anime titles, and have not posted it here. This is one of them.)

Premise: K-On! is probably considered as the poster child of moe/CGDCT Anime ("Cute Girls Doing Cute Things")

With that premise established... I am going to talk about Do It Yourself!!

Do It Yourself is a political commentary about prevailing socio-economic issues in our modern world. The Fourth Industrial Revolution, while pushing Japan into economic growth despite a greatly-aging population, has created a great divide within its people. The proletariats consider a comfortable home and adequate food as luxury, while the upper-class consider having internationally-renowned education and automated robot buttlers as "barely scraping by." Economic unrest begins to go out of hand and, out of desperation, ninjas begin to arise and trespass the territory of the upper-class with agility, while hackers attempt to access their territory with the automated robots that the upper-class have enslaved in the first place.

Ok, I am obviously exaggerating and being overly-dramatic, so please ignore the previous paragraph. But I'm not kidding if I said that the Fourth Industrial Revolution, ninjas, and hacking existed in this anime.

............

Using the "Cute Girls (do cute things)" sentence format, the anime can be summarized as... "Cute girls build a treehouse."

To put it simply... Do It Yourself is the story of a bunch of girls who join the DIY Club in the pursuit of friendship, companionship and, of course, craftsmanship. Despite having additional members from a neighboring school, the club is short of one member in order for the school to honor their club as official. So they decide to build a treehouse in order to attract more members.

Since it is a moe/CGDCT type of Anime, it will probably, maybe, inevitably be compared to the poster child of its genre. K-On! is a hilarious anime and the characters are very much animated (I don't mean that in an animation kind of way.) But on the other hand, Do It Yourself is... very mundane. I would dare say that it could actually be boring. I mean, the greatest conflict that the DIY ever had was that [Spoiler (click to open)]the club's raw materials were mistakenly taken and, thus, had nothing to use to build their treehouse. I was, like, can't you grab more materials again? But to be honest, this mundanity (not a real word, I checked) is ok for me. Sometimes you just want to see a bunch of girls enjoy their time in school as they pursue a project that all of them are determined to accomplish.

Something else that I observed is that I feel like this Anime is for a younger audience. Apart from the fact that this has absolutely zero hints of anyone being sexualized or fetishized, I feel like this also reflects the art style. The colors are not too saturated, and I might even dare say that the colors are "simple" to look at - not too many shades.

The main characters of Do It Yourself!! Yes, the name of the rightmost character really is Juliet Queen Elizabeth VIII.

The "younger-audience art style" I feel is even more pronounced with how the characters are drawn and colored. Two specific things I noticed:
  1. The style and coloring of eyes/irises vary rather greatly across characters:
    • The eyes of Yua and Miku are very similar - narrow ovals with a red color (but I think Miku's eyes have a liiitle hint of purple/pink)
    • Rei's eyes are also narrow but have a single color shade
    • Koki's is wider,
    • Then Takumin's eyes are also wider,
    • Then Jobko's eyes are not only circular, but only use a single shade of color.
  2. The "shadows" of some of the characters' hair isn't a darker shade of their hair color, but would use a seemingly-different color instead:
    • Yua has gray/lightly brown hair, with a blue shadow
    • Rei has orange hair with a green shadow
    • Takumin has a faint violet(?) hair, with a teal shadow
    • Jobko's hair is blonde, with a faded pink shadow
These two main points remind me more of cartoons than anime. Anime characters are usually the same overall form and "shape" but with certain modified attributes such as the hair, clothes, and voice. For the eyes, I think that's a relatively big departure compared to other Anime. As for the characters' hair "shades", I think the studio was trying to make the artwork more "colorful" despite not having too much saturation.

............

I've written most of these things about more than a month ago. I think what I wanted to say was that, despite Do It Yourself not having much conflict and even things going on, it was an enjoyable Anime to watch. And that Hikage Takumi is really adorable.
