Well, hello there

Yeah, I totally did not mean to buzz off like that for a week. Last Thursday I flew to Calgary for the Canadian Health Libraries Association annual conference. Terrific conference--there were a bunch of really interesting keynote speakers, a number of good contributed papers, I took a continuing education session on the Friday, about teaching ( Read more... )

I knew you'd enjoy Sherlock! It's rather brilliant, and I can't wait for the next season. I also enjoyed Being Human although I haven't yet decided if I'm going to buy it or not. I watched a few episodes of the US version and wasn't impressed. In many cases it's almost a verbatim rendering of the UK series, not to mention the physical resemblance of the actors to their British counterparts. It was to the point where the actor playing George had the same hesitant, almost stammering speech patterns as UK George. It was really distracting to watch because it only served to remind me of the original. If you're going to remake something that was already pretty good then do something with it. Otherwise I'll stick with the original series.

Ahem. Mini-rant over! Now we can chat about the awesomeness that is Sherlock!

I, too, see no point in doing a complete literal remake of something--I mean, I know the American Queer As Folk went on for several seasons, but the title didn't even make sense in American English. Why??

Also, why would you find a guy who looked as much as possible like Mitchell and yet was not Irish? Silliness!

Sherlock, however, was fab. I love that Watson has brains but also does the "Wow!" reaction to Sherlock ("I'm a high-functioning sociopath. Get it right.")

Did you know that the guy who plays Sherlock is going to be in War Horse next winter with the guy who plays Loki? I'm sure they'll both die horribly but I'll be going to see it anyway. (I think at least the main horse lives...)

Being Human! Hee! The only vampire I actually like. :) Also cute werewolf.

Re the Wallander, we did like the Kenneth Branagh ones but we only really got hooked on the Swedish series (with subtitles, of course). They don't quite dwell on the angst as much.

I love the werewolf, and the cheerfully ditzy ghost. I'm trying not to spoiler myself so I am quite curious about what happened to her, and whether the fact Owen can't see her is significant. I can't decide whether that's sinister.

I have TOTALLY ORDERED Cranford from Amazon, and am rooting for it to get through despite the impending postal strike. (I had the Bingley thought myself when I saw clips on YouTube!)

I've also ordered Suburban Shootout, despite not being sure the DVD on Amazon is compatible with my region. Fingers crossed--TH looks beyond adorable and utterly hapless in it!

I've only seen a couple of episodes of season 2 of Wallander, so far my impressions are: Volvos, ohmyGodKurtgettherapyormaybeadog, Volvos, and DotheSwedesnotbelieveinfurniture???

I'm going to try the last ep sometime this weekend, but maybe only is the sun is shining and the birds are singing!
