so you're making a post about france and paris and you don't even mention me. I AM SAD OK.
i saw "2 days in paris" with my best friend last summer before I left, i'm pretty sure i posted about it, saying she dragged me to the movies to see it despite my reluctance at the label "romantic chick flick" to only laugh so hard every two minutes. if you've ever been in a multicultural relationship, this movie's for you. haha ! it reminded me of so many good times with british or american bfs. it was sweet and sharp, as you said.
Oi, I'd have totally mentioned you if I were writing about visiting Northern Ireland. :-)
So what do you think about Paris? Do you think you'll end up back there?
I've been meaning to see this film for ages, since I read a review of it in The Guardian. I've never seen Before Sunrise or After Sunrise, which are now on my to-watch list (hopefully I won't be disappointed.)
you need to see them! I actually own the dvds but gave them to one of my lovers who I'll probably won't see again for a bit because he's far away but you'd get them if I had them ;)
I love Julie Delpy, saw her life last August at the EIFF.
you'll hopefully be one of my first guests if I manage to find a room in the summer!
That's what I find too: gay men in real life are so complex, infuriating, unique, etc. I just don't find that complexity very often in films with gay couples (at least gay male couples).
It would be too cool for school to be your neighbour in Paris. Perhaps we'd live close to the Père Lachaise Cemetery? ;-)
Oooh, I loved that film. Although beforehand I was puzzled by the trailer, which seemed to present it as some kind of "chick flick" nightmare. But this one's directed by Julie Delpy? I thought. The trailer couldn't have been more misleading; it was lovely.
I went to Paris for my Mum's birthday a few years ago. By the time we reached Notre Dame it was too dark to take photos, so obviously I will have to go back. Someday...
I read a review before seeing the trailer, so I sort of expected the film to be good. I was very surprised though to learn she composed and edited it too. She even sings in some of the songs! She's shot up on my estimation.
Hmmm, that's very true! I'd really like to revisit those films. Which one is your favourite in his three colours trilogy? I think Red is my fave, with White a close second.
i think that you are dead on with this: gay directors/filmmakers//makers/directors of gay films have to establish gayness, legitimate romantic intrigue between two people of the same gender. the films almost always become about being gay rather than about being in love or about existing in the world. heterosexuals do not have identity crises about realizing they love who they love, but homosexuals have "coming out stories" and those lead to some really bad art. ha.
i think that lesbian films are even guiltier of this than gay male films. sometimes i feel the same way about gay/lesbian literature. but i do think that it is a legitimate artistic challenge that people have to face when choosing to make a piece about the gays.
