[phone a; no filters]

So, thanks a lot for dragging me out into the snow on your ridiculous snow day and everything. I'm glad I had the opportunity to go out there and catch a cold from somewhere or someone or something. Because I obviously needed a real and legitimate reason to skip school for once. It's just wonderful, really.

Well, there's always the old fashioned ways. . .

Such as messengers?

That may be a little too slow for this place.

Messengers, letters. . . I suppose if you can think of one, there's always code.

Or you could train birds.

Those are decent ideas for an army, perhaps, who has the resources and time to train birds and teach code, but Mayfield isn't such an ideal situation.

Letters and messengers I could probably field for less urgent matters.

-Here comes some hot soup, at least.-

You are the whiniest sick boy I've ever taken care of, you know that?

Leave the soup and go. Let me die in peace.

And miss this chance to rib you on the way out? Fat chance.

What an awful mother you are. It's a miracle that I haven't died sooner.

[He won't make any real effort to get her to leave, of course. He enjoys the company, he just won't admit it.]

You can? What kind of things?

[Just a little]

D-depends on w-what I have. I-I'm usually better with co-computers, but I can b-build things l-like catapults and s-such.

Mayfield doesn't leave us much in the way of computers. There's a network for those who have such things up and running, but those number in the few. As for catapults, I can keep that in mind, but it isn't quite what I'm looking for right now.

[Having listened to the whole message, Cain fiddled a little with the cord at his end in silence for a while. Offering what he could do was outside the remit of a normal ten year old, and yet Abel had said he needn't hide any longer and it could be useful...]

If I can find some wiring and tools at the hardware store, I can make either radios or walkie talkies for DA use?

You mean like handheld radios?

[What is technology.]

Right, something very similar.

The parts here are limited, but I might even be able to make earpieces and receivers... but that's only a possibility.

Earpieces..?

It may be possible to find someone who can generate better parts with the mix of people we have here, but I'd be wary of that. It would all vanish the moment those people were droned.

[Balin's been busy taking some of the spare shotgun ammunition he's bought into the basement-but he's also been taking down some very random stuff. Most of it carefully packaged and labeled with cheap colored stickers from the general store-a lot of red and white labels, some yellows and greens.]

[But now, he's just hanging out in the living room with Caesar there. He had his journal nearby, but he hasn't written anything new down in it yet. He's more interested in practicing with his "cantrips" at the moment. Looking down at his hand, light gathers, twists, and forms into a glowing blue Element:]

[It's more interesting than his books, so he inevitably looks up from paging through one of those to watch.

His trips to the basement go uncommented on for now; he'll get to that later.]

What's with the circles?
