I've had these lyrics knocking about on my hard drive for quite some time, actually: I wrote the chorus after a lovely birthday spent wandering through Pittsburgh (er, a year and a half ago), and it sat in my notebook, and several months ago I wrote the rest of the song -- again drawing on trips to Pittsburgh and Boston and urban fantasy and all of the things that I love and love to imagine about cities. (Of course cities are full of faeries. Of course.)
Lullay Lullay
.mp3 at Mediafirelyrics, melody, guitar, piano, and vocals by Jo Robbins
October market glimmers with scarves
trees reach down their blackened hands
and if you listen, bright and sharp
the song keeps humming beneath the land
trees, oh trees, what have you seen?
here by the pavement, here by the sea?
iron and water and songs and wind
and the subway running deep within
oh this is where the fey folk are
between the concrete and the stars
hush now darling, don’t you cry
the subway sings a lullaby
lullay lullay lullay lalloo
lullay lullay lullay lullay
lullay lullay lullay lalloo
lullay lullay lullay lullay
the heart is dim, the heart is dark
the heart is but a flickering spark
the city coughs with gasoline
come, my darling, what do you see?
oh this is where the fey folk are
between the concrete and the stars
hush now darling, don’t you cry
the subway sings a lullaby
lullay lullay lullay lalloo
lullay lullay lullay lullay
lullay lullay lullay lalloo
lullay lullay lullay lullay
trees and stone, what have you seen?
the markings of all history
the old folk dwelling underground
a spell a charm a secret sound
the woman with the fiddle on the edge of the street
the tree leaning over the cinema
the boy with eyes as bright as coins -
the folk still keep this city joined
oh this is where the fey folk are
between the concrete and the stars
hush now darling, don’t you cry
the subway sings a lullaby
lullay lullay lullay lalloo
lullay lullay lullay lullay
lullay lullay lullay lalloo
