song 8: lullay lullay

Oct 30, 2009 19:34

I've had these lyrics knocking about on my hard drive for quite some time, actually: I wrote the chorus after a lovely birthday spent wandering through Pittsburgh (er, a year and a half ago), and it sat in my notebook, and several months ago I wrote the rest of the song -- again drawing on trips to Pittsburgh and Boston and urban fantasy and all of ( Read more... )

I love this one. It's so haunting, and I adore the combination of fey autumn and the city fitting right in with it.

So, I've now listened to it, and it is magical in exactly the right way for the city in autumn.

(Also, the 'lullay' bits bring up memory-echoes of what is possibly my favourite Christmas carol, yay.)

♥!

It is probably subconsciously drawn from that very carol! I know we have a Loreena McKennitt version that I have listened to since I was fourteen, and I think there's one on our Celtic Soujourn Christmas album?

(I MUST LISTEN TO CHRISTMAS MUSIC RIGHT NOW. I LOOK FORWARD TO THIS LONGINGLY ALL YEAR.)

CHRISTMAS MUSIC FTW.

Our family's stand-by Christmas CD is this one, which is gorgeous but sadly appears to be out of 'print' (though apparently available by special order from the Camerata's website).

I may not have mentioned this before because for reasons I haven't figured out, I fail at commenting on these songs, but for what it's worth, this one is freaking awesome. I mean, just the lyrics alone are awesome--urban fantasy in song? YES PLEASE--but putting together with the melody is pretty fantastic. Now it just needs, like, the story it's a soundtrack for or something. :p

Oh, P.S., the chorus was totally the first thing I wrote in the notebook you sent me wrapped in the sparkly paper. (The apocalypse story and We Pay A Tithe To Hell are also in there. ^-^)

But yes, I really really wanted the urban fantasy angle. There is not enough urban fantasy music to suit me. Uh, especially because I am trying to make a mix for War for the Oaks... >_>
