Carlton straightened his suit jacket and tie. "Don't do that again," he said, the epitome of composed. "I am perfectly cheerful on my own." He definitely would've preferred to say something stronger, but this... girl... would have taken it as an encouragement.
If there was one thing Lassiter did not give, it was encouragement to delinquents.
