And of course, I'm so glad to hear that you were so moved. It's a devastating loss for Basil, compounded by the fact that no one will ever truly understand it. *sob*
Thanks so much for reading and commenting!

Because for all the theories and guessing and wondering if maybe, just maybe, Ratigan proved to be a true sewer rat and refused to die...they were at the end, one of them had to go, and it was always meant to be this way. Ratigan's gone, but not without taking a great bleeding piece of Basil with him; if it had been the opposite way around, it would have been the same.
"Tonight they lick their wounds and pray for the strength to endure."
I'm sure they will. They've both come through wars and survived, and they will endure. But ohgodohgod, what it means to endure...

Again, thank you for reading and commenting. I know it sounds redundant since I say it so often, but really, I appreciate it very much. <3

I have long wanted-indeed, yearned to read something like this ever since rediscovering the film as an adult. The voices-Ratigan's, Basil's, were just perfect, the ending was supremely-realized pathos, and you write it all so gracefully.
tl;dr: THIS TOTALLY MADE MY DAY ILU. ♥

I agree, seeing the film as an adult is an entirely different experience, and I'm so glad that the fic(s? if you read the others) was able to do it justice. "Gracefully?" Such lovely praise! Thanks very much! I hope you'll come back for more as the series continues.
ILU2. <3

And I noticed new things. Like what happens when Dawson lets some nasty comment about good riddance to Ratigan slip?
Or what if Basil had died, and Ratigan had gained the empire but had no Dawson there to help him through?
Or what happens the day Dawson finally has to accept that Ratigan's role in Basil's life wasn't as simple as he's trying so hard to pretend it was?
What if Dawson is trying to be gentle and loving, like he thinks he should be, in bed, and all Basil can think about is how much better it was when Ratigan was alive, because even though he hated it, he secretly relished the scars and the pain and the pleasure, and Ratigan took responsibility away from him, and meanwhile poor Dawson is trying to be a considerate lover and it isn't working out?
What if Basil ignores Dawson and starts taking the portrait of Ratigan to bed with him and going on dates with it and drinking tea with it? What if ( ... )

Seriously, though, thanks for the re-read. ^_^
Love your suggestions, but there's only one problem: I don't ship Dawson/Basil. Like, at all. I can't. Now, I ship Holmes/Watson like crazy, so that's not the problem. The problem is just that Dawson himself is so, so straight. I might be able to do a little one-sided Basil/Dawson, but the good doctor will always be a very oblivious zero on the Kinsey scale. :/
BUT YOUR LAST PARAGRAPH MADE ME SHRIEK WITH LAUGHTER. GOOD JOB. XDDD
Also, weren't you going to write a GMD fic? DIDN'T YOU TEASE ME WITH IT, YOU WICKED THING

STILL WANT MORE.
But no seriously, I totally was writing GMD fic and I have no idea what the hell happened to it or what it was even about or anything. Like it isn't in any of my fic folders or anything and I have no memories beyond obviously Basil/Ratigan was involved, and knowing me there was some UST, and probably something darkish? But that just means that it was a fic by me that wasn't inspired by sugar.
And now I'm getting wild thoughts like WELL IF IT'S AN ANNE FIC, OBVIOUSLY TONY STARK SHOWED UP WITH DADDY ISSUES and now I'm considering how that would work out and I'm concerned because I COULD TOTALLY JUSTIFY THAT TO MYSELF.

Um, yeah, in other words. Have my soul, my firstborn and a few cookies?

I'm so glad that the series had such an effect on you. I'm hoping to make it as a professional writer someday, and comments like yours are just the best kind of encouragement! :D
