The Great Mouse Detective + Poe is just oh my, yes.
I love the shift in tone as the story closes, the way it goes from being lighter and more humorous, albeit with all their usual calculating and tension, to something maddening and troubled and painfully tragic. They're ingrained so deeply into one another it's almost hard to fathom, completely unhealthy, and hopelessly romantic.

The prompt had the potential to get a bit silly, so I wanted to be sure to keep this episode rooted in the overall darker tone of the series as a whole. "Completely unhealthy" and "hopelessly romantic" shouldn't go together, but for this pairing it's entirely accurate, and I'm so pleased to hear you think so.
And of course, thanks so much for reading and commenting!

Is that a deliberate callback to what he was going to engrave on the cigarette case? As well as Basil's line about having no shame where his work is concerned?
You made crossdressing entirely practical in this fic. I salute you, writer. And The Second Waltz is truly fitting for this piece! I could see it all so clearly with the music.
It’s Ratigan, bringing one hand swiftly to the nape of Basil’s neck and the other to the small of his back, and as cheers ring out around them, Ratigan dips him into a deep and passionate kiss.
I'm sorry Basil but oh my god I cheered so hard at that.
“My dear sir, you mustn’t impose yourself on a lady!” And he plays the part of an upperclass woman so well, too.

The great challenge and most fun I've had with this series is trying to make each prompt work organically and naturally for the characters. When I got the "crossdressing" prompt, I really wanted to make it work, rather than being an arbitrary device. I'm so glad to hear that I succeeded! And that you enjoyed the Second Waltz--- I would accept nothing else, it was too perfect for the scene. ^_^
YAY FOR CHEERING. :D As I've said to other commenters, I'm really a hopeless romantic at heart, and this fic was the first one in the series where I had the opportunity for a really romantic gesture. Naturally I wanted it to be a doozy.
Thanks so much for all the comments! Again, I'm just so glad you're enjoying the series. That's why I write them. ^_^

Especially, and I totally feel like this deserves its own paragraph, the intelligence of your characters. More than the spot-on characterisation, the exquisite intelligence and referntial nature of the work is just beautiful.
I'm probably just babbling now, but there you go. Having discovered the chronological-order list, I think I can see where today is going.
Colonel, you are magnificent. That is all.

And I'm so glad to hear that the piece had such an effect on you. There's something particularly breathtaking about a midnight masquerade! Up until this point the series had been rather grim, and I really enjoyed a chance to write something mysterious and romantic.
I really appreciate the comment about their intelligence--- it's my favorite aspect of the pairing, and I want to make sure that it shows through in every fic. Both of these characters are brilliant, and they bring out the best (and worst) in each other.
I hope the rest of the series lives up to your expectations! Thanks so much for reading and commenting.

The outfits, the dance, the music. It was all so lovely, I especially loved Basil's dress so gorgeous.
Now onto the story. Basil is just, he is so heartbreaking in this chapter. By the end of it I literally wanted to just give him a hug and stroke his hair and tell him its ok to feel what he does for Ratigan, its not in so many words logical, but its ok. God I hope our foolish little genius gets back some of his usual confidence soon. As for Ratigan (smirks) you sly dog, well done. And we all know that Ratigan would trick Basil into coming to a masquerade just so he could dance and persuade a few kisses from him. But overall, just in general see his Basil <3 the romantic side of him is enough to make me almost swoon ( ... )
