Jared’s never been particularly scared of thunderstorms, just a bit startled. He’d always hide in bed with his Mama when he was a little boy, curled in the comfort of her arms from the loud claps that would hurt his ear. He always had been a Mama’s boy. Not that Jeff can talk, because he’d be in bed with them more often than not, too. It’d become a thing. If there was even a hint of thunder, there would be tiny feet racing to Daddy and Mama’s bedroom where the bed was huge and warm and where they could look at the window where water droplets would be having their own race down the glass.

It only makes sense that the tradition continue when he got older. He’s not frightened by the loud noise anymore, but the warmth of the covers around him is comforting, reminding him of his Mama and the times they spent just lying there and talking.

Jensen found out this little tradition by accident. Jared’s not ashamed that he snuggles under his covers like a little boy when it’s raining and there are the loud thuds outside, but he doesn’t out and out declare it to the world, either. It had been raining ferociously one day during the second season and he and Jensen weren’t really official yet, just on and off hook ups when they needed to release the tension and stress. Jared wanted more, who wouldn’t with someone as awesome as Jensen, but he didn’t know how to approach the subject because he wasn’t quite sure what Jensen wanted.

The rain was loud, beating a steady rhythm against his bedroom window and the thunder was even more deafening. So of course Jared was curled up in bed, sheets pulled up around him and dogs piled on either side as he gazed outside where the wind howled and the trees danced. He didn’t even hear Jensen come in his room, which was a testament to how lost in his thoughts Jared was. Jensen had stayed over from yesterday because the storm was so bad, but he’d chosen to stay in the guest room rather than with Jared. Jared had assumed he was asleep or something since it’s still pretty early and they didn’t have to go in today - a rare occurrence to say the least.

“Are you scared of the big bad thunderstorm, Jay?” A voice came from the entryway of the door, startling Jared from his contemplation.

“Uh…” Jared said eloquently. He looked up to see Jensen leaning oh so sexily on the edge of the doorframe, hands tucked into his pajama pockets and looking like everything Jared wanted. “No!” He exclaimed after a second; a brilliant comeback, clearly.

“Mmmhmm, that’s why you’re all curled up in bed, huh?” Jensen asked with his eyebrow raised. Even from across the room, Jared could see the curl of his lips letting Jared know he was just teasing him.

Jared shrugged, not confirming or denying anything.

“Wanna protect me from the big bad thunderstorm, Jensen?” Jared asked, figuring he had nothing to lose and he wouldn’t really mind a warm body curled next to him. Jensen smiled a beatific smile then and sidled into the room, nudging Sadie a little so he could get into bed next to Jared. They sat in silence for a bit, just staring at the rain hitting the windowpane. Jared could feel Jensen inch a little closer - bit by bit - until they were pretty much pressed together along their sides. Their feet were tangled and Jared had ended up slouching down a little to rest his head on Jensen’s shoulder. Their fingers were twined, Jensen rubbing his thumb back and forth across Jared’s knuckles. It was soothing, just sitting with Jensen without a need for words.

Slowly, Jared tumbled out the story of him sitting with his Mama during thunderstorms. He whispered to Jensen about how they’d just lie there for hours, talking about anything and nothing at all. Jared didn’t want to break the fragile air around them, as if he and Jensen were lost in their own world.

Jensen had whispered back a confession of how he’d hide under the bed sometimes with his puppy. It was like he didn’t want to fracture the bubble they’d cocooned themselves in either.

They didn’t talk about it, but something had changed that day. Their romps in bed were slower and longer and more often. Sometimes, they’d just lay there, no words needed. Jensen wouldn’t use the guest bedroom anymore if he’d stay over, just getting in next to Jared and pressing their bodies close.

Since that fateful day, every time Jensen was over or Jared was at his place and there was a thunderstorm, you’d find the two men snuggled up in bed - arms and feet intertwined under the sheets and eyes looking out the window with soft kisses exchanged every now and again like there wasn’t a care in the entire world.

And there wasn’t; not in that moment at least. They had the loud echo of thunder, the flashes of lightening, the soothing tapping of the rain, and each other. The both of them didn’t need anything else.
