A/N: Sequel to yesterday’s fic smoke before the fire. Still pre-slash, and I’ve taken liberties with how things are handled with the fire department, 911, and the paramedics.

Jared loves being a fireman. He loves the adrenaline rush, the chance to help save people, and he’s not going to lie to himself, the uniform.

He feels like he has a gift of finding people in the most overlooked spots and bringing them to safety. Jared’s not going to deny that being told a thank you feels awesome and all, but he doesn’t do it for that reason, he just does it because everyone deserves a chance to be saved.

When Jared was a little boy, his neighbor’s house caught fire. The fire department was there in what seemed like seconds and they put out the fire, two brave firemen going into the house to get the family out. Jared’s best friend Matt lived next door, and one of the firemen got him out safely. Jared had rushed over from his parents grip to go see Matt and the fireman waved away his gratitude citing that he was just happy to help.

That incident changed Jared’s life and he wanted to be the guy rushing into burning building and able to rescue someone. He wanted to be able to protect people and their things. He wanted to make a difference.

Which was why being a fireman, although stressful and horrifying at times, is so rewarding.

Right now, he’s not thinking as he dashes into the building of the local newspaper. Someone inside called 911 and Jared’s unit was dispatched to the site. Jared saw some flames in the upper window right before he rushed inside.

He’s thankful for his mask and for working out whenever he can as he runs up the steps to find his rescue victim. He finds the man lying on the floor near the window gasping for breath and the first thought that runs through his mind is how gorgeous he is. He takes in the green eyes and pink lips and Jared banishes those thoughts as he focuses. Before he can reach down to help the man up, he passes out. Jared is even more grateful that he works out now, because he knows the guy is just going to be dead weight.

Jared picks up the man he’s rescuing and quickly sends a silent thanks for the guy opening the window. As quick as he can he jumps out, man in tow, and is glad his partners have put a ladder outside. He climbs down, holding the guy tightly, and gets them to safer ground as the rest of the firemen take care of the actual fire.

The paramedics are standing by and Jared takes the guy to their van. They start looking him over and something compels Jared to stay put, even if he usually just leaves the people he’s gotten in their care. They give the man some oxygen to flush out all the smoke consumed and tell Jared that they need to go to the hospital to make sure nothing else is wrong and so the guy, Jensen according to his ID, can get some rest.

Jared doesn’t even hesitate before telling them he’ll meet them at the hospital. He has no clue what he’s getting himself into, but there’s something about this Jensen character that makes Jared want to find out more.

Next: just what the doctor ordered
