If you are still thinking about the Corolla, I can tell you that snow tires solve the hills in winter problem and otherwise we've had no problems with it. Nathan says to tell you want a Hyundai Elantra - he's driven his Dad's and, of the small sedans, he really liked it. We didn't look at one because I was instant on side curtain airbags, but I'm a freak like that. We also test drove a Civic and both hated it, if that data point is useful.

I'll keep it in mind.

I'm still hoping to stay out of the Japanese cars if at all possible. The American manufacturers don't seem to like small- to mid- sedans, though, and I don't know if I can afford German.

just to put in my two cents: my corolla's a fun car, easy to drive really fast ;). i do love it. hated the civic when i test drove it. didn't consider the fit because just looking at it made me claustrophobic, and if i remember it's not that much cheaper. it is difficult to find a small sedan by american manufacturers, and their version of the economy model is not cheap. wes has a hyundai elantra and it has served him very well. it feels nice and roomy, good mileage and all that, and a good warranty. of course he's well over the 100,000 mile mark now, but still...

So, you know what's funny? I completely forgot about this comment.

On Monday, I saw someone in QuickCheck who looked like me, and when I left, her car looked like mine, but it was a new Hyundai Elantra. Today I checked out their website, and it seems to match all my requirements. John looked it up on Consumer Reports, and it's rated the best of all the cars in the size range I want.

I still have to go find a dealership and get into one, but it's by far the front-runner at this point.

Tell Nathan I said he's probably right, and I should have listened to him a month ago.

this may sound weird, and i know you're a sedan driving person, but...try the honda fit. it's small. but i have a 6 foot 7 inch or so friend who never is comfortable in any "small" car and he fit in it. comfortably. with his wife and 3 kids in there too. felt there was still room after that!! and it gets excellent gas mileage...worth a try, at least! but i agree with turtle_morn not liking the civic, my boss has a relatively new one and its interior feels....cheap.

Our lease is up at the end of September, and we need more space and a second bathroom if we're going to continue living together.

It's unlikely that we'll find what we want for the right price in Madison, but I don't want more than about a 20 minute commute. If we can't find anything inside that range, I may try again to find a place on my own. Right now, though, the rental market is following the sales market, and there's a ton of availability and prices are staying reasonable. We'll see what's out there in 3 months or so.

It'll probably be movers if we move together; possibly even if I move on my own. I might ask for help with the packing, though.
