"Heroes". Are they?

The question above is in reference to this morning’s BBC 1 Parade of the Heroes at 11am. It was to do with the British Olympians and Paralympians; they were parading through London in recognition of their achievements.

I know that the Olympics were a huge event, not only for China but for the rest of the world (including Ireland, yes), but Britain ( Read more... )

I love sports. I love playing them, and I love watching some of them (soccer, hockey, Ozzy rules, mostly). I get a lot of pleasure from watching the Olympic sports, especially the more obscure ones.

Still, you are spot-on. I think the entire world is too quick to label someone a "hero" these days. The word has practically lost its meaning.

Well said.

But can you tell me why Scots, Welshmen and Irish are still treated like they are an afterthougth to the "great" Britain....ie Murray is suddenly British when he wins but when he loose he is Scottish again......
Or why is it not Britain when playing soccer but the 4 nations once again.....Proud of being English is better.
And I agree with Coldlikedeath....THere just sportsmen doing sth where they are suppose to be good at.....why spending such incredible lots of money when there are still ppl in Britain that cannot afford proper food or heating.....

And by the Way Your so wonderful Great Britain loves there own little wars too.....Falklands...oops I forgot that was because British valours were attacked.....and how much they love to follow the USA it their wars and being proud that British Soldiers are there to do there duty....

You know how many stupid wars were created by blind Nationalism

Sorry Cold for being so strong here...you can delete this if you want too

First of all I am not British at all.....and yes I love sport...but nobody is forcing you to spent that time into it. you are doing it for your own sake, because you like to win, to compete., there is nobody out there that is putting a giun against your head and make you do it....there are ppl who don't like sport are you saying that they will all become lazy fat slobs...that is quiet a consumption you are making...I am not sporty at all, but I cycle and walk to work everyday....I don't have a car and that means I am active all the time....
No I am not jealous and happy for them to win, but don't put them on a pedestal as we have seen sport has become very comercial and for that reason alone most sporters don't play fair but using doping....Is that an example you want to give to your youth.

I have never been proud of the country I just happen to be born in...it is just a matter of "luck" I believe that we should be one world instead of little pittyful countries competing against each other.
