Nice answers.

As you commented, it is very USA based. Kind of shows up the ignorance of the author more than it does the shockingness of the questions.

The only issue I have with your answers is for Q 15. I think that physical violence against a child indicates more about a parent’s lack of ability than a child’s lack of discipline (IMO).

Punishment and discipline does not have to be physical violence.

But hey, feel free to disagree :-D

I agree, they don't have to be. They also don't have to be exclusive.

From what I can tell, children need boundaries, along with a clear signal when they have exceeded them. That clear signal can be a code word, or it can be a smack, or almost anything that is unpleasant, unambiguous and never used unless the set line has been crossed.

So a smack doesn't need to leave a welt or break a wooden spoon. It can be a tap, or even mostly ceremony.

I think the problem comes when parents - and hence the boundaries - are undermined by outsiders. Kids catch on pretty quickly when an area becomes grey, and search for the limits.

You don't see people disguising the taste of coffee because all they care about is the effect.

Isn't this exactly what energy drinks and caffeine pills do?

Yeah, good point.

I guess we have a binge culture in general, not just for alcohol.

Perhaps. I don't think that the taste of the drug really makes a big difference though. I've seen people take too much caffeine and make themselves sick by drinking lots of energy drinks, taking lots of caffeine pills and by drinking too many espresso shots. I've seen people get far too drunk off alcopops, but I've seen it happen from taking too many shots of bourbon and from just drinking too many beers, too.

I think the reason we see so many people (particularly young people) binging on alcohol is because for many people more alcohol == more fun. Of course, not everyone enjoys being drunk, and some people prefer to just get a little tipsy, but this seems to be the prevailing attitude amongst 16-20yos. I think it's something most people grow out of (I did) so it doesn't really bother me that much.
