Is there anything cuter than a fennec fox cub? Not much, I suspect.

Emily Nussbaum has come to her senses about Smash. I admit I have, too, but that just means it's backed up on my Tivo. At some point I'll kill the season pass, but I do still like the musical numbers, even if the plot and characters make no sense any more ( Read more... )

Poor Marthe. I have thoughts about the emphasis on bloodlines and inheritance, and wonder why the Dame would make no effort to raise her own grand-daughter with more emotional support. Or why Dunnett chose to give Francis and Marthe all the same skills & character traits, but in a woman the result was warped and angry. Certainly there's an in-text explanation for Marthe's personality and fate, but I doubt it was necessary. And I do wish she'd chosen to write extensively from Marthe's perspective: it might have made her more sympathetic. But the POV characters are always the most sympathetic and least ambiguous: Will, Kate, Philippa, Jerott, Richard, Adam...

Yep. I'd love to see an AU where Marthe gets to be the star.

I feel exactly the same way about Smash. It's both awesome and awful.

Seeing you're watching smash, they are sponsoring a contest to help a deserving poor high school put on a musical. One is near where I used to teach. Muskegon High School. You can vote for it in their contest! (please do!)
