Is there anything cuter than a fennec fox cub? Not much, I suspect.

Emily Nussbaum has come to her senses about Smash. I admit I have, too, but that just means it's backed up on my Tivo. At some point I'll kill the season pass, but I do still like the musical numbers, even if the plot and characters make no sense any more.

I am reminded that I need to get Throne of the Crescent Moon; Alyssa Rosenberg interviews Saladin Ahmed.

Martha Wells and some other folks put together an impressive list of non-European fantasy written by women.

HiLoBrow examines the significance of Anonymous' use of the Guy Fawkes mask.

Speaking of symbolism, I have been hoping I would find some critical/thoughtful discussion about Johnny Depp and his Tonto makeup. And I have. Oh, and here's Native Appropriations on the issue. Many people have given Johnny a free pass because of his Native heritage, but I think that means we should hold him to a higher standard. If he is serious about honoring his ancestors and his past, he needs to realize that costuming Tonto like a fantasy Indian stereotype is not helping Native people, and his "intent" in the portrayal doesn't save him.

Noted for later viewing: Jay Smooth on the killing of Trayvon Martin.

The guy who runs Get Rich Slowly is getting divorced, and needs to get individual health insurance. This is a problem.

My reread of Pawn in Frankincense has reached the climax, and it was very hard to put down the iPod at the end of the dog-walk this evening. But I'm trying to stretch it out, and think about the story rather than just absorb it.

And on this reread, I have to say that Jerott is still a schmuck, whose idealism and romantic gestures don't make up for his emotional stupidity, moral posturing, and incredible lack of self-awareness. And even more than I realized, Marthe is utterly shafted by the narrative. I wish I could find an AU for Marthe somewhere, like a Doctor Who crossover, or something. She deserves better of the other characters, and of the author.
