Interesting about women and the ultra marathoning. One of the women who posts on a biking board I lurk at just ran a double iron man last week and she was third among women and fifth overall, so three of the top five were women.

Was Jerott Blythe ever NOT a dick? I mean, sure, I liked him and all, but it was really in spite of (or sometimes because of).

After I'm done with this latest play and have free time again, I'm going to have to dig into a reread. You're inspiring me!

You know, I want to like him--he's short, and he's kind of angsty, and he has "magnificent eyes", but he's totally weird about Lymond, even right at the beginning, when he hasn't seen him for nine years. He gossips about him, and reads his mail, and causes no end of trouble--and, in the end, is at least partly responsible for Oonagh's death, but he isn't self-aware enough to realize it.

There was a thread on Dunnetwork recently about Lymond's friends, and I have to admit that he basically has shitty friends. In the sense that his peers are generally pretty crap friends (Will, Jerott, Richard, etc.), or they die too soon (Tom Erskine & Diccon Chancellor); the ones who are better friends are all his subordinates: Archie & Turkey Mat, Alec Guthrie & Adam Blacklock, etc. Possibly because his subordinates know their limits and don't challenge him as much, and his peers have the effrontery to consider themselves his peer?

Once you start digging, the whole subtext starts looking really damned hinky...

Well, Mark's starting Buffy S4, so at least one group will pick it up again.
