My computer appears to be dying. Dyiiiiing! And I have nothing to back anything up on because my external hard drive has chosen THIS MOMENT to abandon its mortal life and move on to a better place. I recently had an external that started deleting files, ran out of space on my laptop and the desktop and then the desktop died, before I could back the whole my solar system! I can relate.

Before my desktop died (think it's power supply) the monitor had been doing some odd flickering and the problem was across multiple monitors also. We tracked it down to a bad video card, so that's something to consider.

As for backup, flash thumb drives are rather inexpensive, if you're up for a purchase. I just bought a 32gb one for about $50. I'm looking at an 8gb one for around $15. I have a collection of flash drives for additional storage/transport.

I meant to add, good luck with it!

Buying a new external is one option. The other is to use Google's server temporarily to back everything up as a safety precaution.

Don't just google's as an online back-up drive. Upload your important data-files to your mail-accounts for the time being as a back-up. That seems to be the safest method.

I cross my fingers that it's not a virus though... Maybe it's the graphics card?
