we do NOT need the drama

So, we had a group of volunteers come out from local college to fill in a few hours for college credits. Most of the time, when this happens, these kids will do a fairly decent job, usually walking dogs, some light cleaning, things like that. Since they normally come in the afternoon, AFTER all the major cleaning is done, we just have them do ( Read more... )

bad volunteers are still bad, animal shelter / zoo, idiot alert

Goddammit..why oh why would you volunteer at a humane society if you are allergic? The reaction to the rash makes me believe you were dealing with a severe case of attention grabbing histrionic broad syndrome.

I would point out that you don't know you're allergic to something until you come into contact with it. I didn't know I was allergic to mould killer until a landlord used it in the bathroom of the house I was living in.

That said - I didn't get a tiny rash. I got swelling across every single bit of exposed skin and you watch it creeping along my arms. I had no clue what was happening and ended up going to the hospital.

From her reaction of "stick me with epipen!" she either had an allergy she knew about (in which case she should have out it on your forms and informed you) or else she was having histrionics. And I can't help thinking that it was option two, that she hadn't actually wanted to do the job and was leaping on the first excuse to get her out of there.

I volunteered at a therapy riding program once and had no idea I was allergic to the bug spray they put on the horses until I started to react to it. I had swelling, turned bright red, and it started spreading and my hands (point of initial contact) turned into little claws I could barely move. I was not hysterical, I simply went to urgent care and got some heavy duty allergy meds and pain killers. It took me a couple weeks to fully bounce back from that one but it never even occurred to me to start wailing and creating a scene :p

Yeah. It's the total scene that leads me to think "someone's putting this on."

Plus you know, allergic reactions vary but I've never seen one that's just a small rash that makes you so unwell you have to go home. It's totally possible, but with the attitude of the medical professionals to it it strikes me that it really wasn't all that.

I can't talk, I worked for a vet, except difference is, I know I'm allergic. It takes about 10 mins after handling a cat for the sneezing and runny nose to start, and 15 mins for it to go away. I also break out in hives from certain dog breeds (anything with super short stabby hair), just a quick wash with soap and water fixes it.

I agree with one of the other posters in that that little twat just wanted attention/to not be there in the first place. It's shitty that she was so selfish as to pull that sort of stunt :\

Heh, when I did my CVT externship, the head vet at the practice I was in didn't believe me when I told her I was allergic to horses and took me with her to draw some blood for Coggins testing and clean a sheath.

It wasn't me who burst into hysterics when she saw the back of my arm that had been up against the stallion's flank broke out in huge plaques. She threw the bottle of Benadryl at me when we got back to the clinic. I was just like "I told you so..."

I worked in an ice cream place where nuts and peanut butter were one of the main ingredients we used. I just wore gloves or had a coworker do it as I'm very allergic. I needed a job with more hours and pay, so I took it. People like this who overreact to get out of stuff kill me.

I had no idea I was allergic to latex until I started washing dishes. The gloves they give you made my whole arms break out into hives/rashes. IT SUCKED. But I had to do my job... Not using the gloves made my skin dry, crack, peel and shed. It was nasty. Washing your hands that much does not make them soft.

Yep, I bought by own latex-free dish gloves and carried them back and forth to work with me.
