Has anyone seen this video?

Having grown up almost completely surrounded by other homeschoolers, I have been curious for a long time to see whether my peers would homeschool their own children, and for those who do, the way in which they would pursue it. Many of those my age and younger have not yet reached the point of having school-aged children, but those just a few years ( Read more... )

I'll have to post later tonight when I get home and have some time to clean up my thoughts and watch the video. I'm pretty sure I know the video, but want to make sure. I have some second hand experience with homeschooling, friends and neighbors I've talked to about it.

I'm interested in your thoughts...it's not the complete video (it's just a trailer, but you get a pretty clear picture from it and the site itself), which I'd sort of like to see, but I'm not likely to pay $20 for something that I suspect is drivel...

Homeschooling, like any other schooling, is largely dependent on the quality of the teachers. I've seen people who have a strong sense of self, firm convictions and beliefs, and they credit much of their sense of identity to being homeschooled. Conversely, I've seen people who are so out of touch with the world around them, all I could think was "it seems like a cult like environment, and it's the only place you're remotely comfortable." Even when I go to the bar next door, I've had people come up and tell me they've seen me there for years and they haven't seen me talk to anyone. I tend to sit by myself, keep to myself. As a child, I spent a large amount of time in my room. Even when I had friends over, part of me couldn't wait for them to go home. I have a very hard time around groups of people. I can't imagine being homeschooled, ( ... )

I should explain here that my irritation was not based on a knee-jerk reaction of "OMG they're talking bad about homeschoolers!" I have my own issues with the homeschooled populace, and they line up pretty closely with your observations. Quality of education is absolutely dependent upon the people who are doing the teaching, along with other factors of the educational environment. I, too, have seen homeschoolers go wild when they hit college (or left home), and I've seen a lot who never learned how to cope with "the real world" and were totally lost upon reaching adulthood ( ... )
