Having grown up almost completely surrounded by other homeschoolers, I have been curious for a long time to see whether my peers would homeschool their own children, and for those who do, the way in which they would pursue it. Many of those my age and younger have not yet reached the point of having school-aged children, but those just a few years older than me have. A good number of them have chosen to educate their children at home, while some have not. Most, however, have not strayed from their Christian roots, and would identify with the majority of their parents' religious beliefs. Certainly, they are interested in raising godly children.
I think it is fair to say that most of them would be surprised (or at least I hope they would be) to hear the claims made in
this video trailer produced by the (in)famous Botkin family. Regardless of my own beliefs, when I saw the trailer the other day, it really irritated me. I think it draws some really insulting conclusions about those from my generation of homeschoolers.
This article by a former homeschool mom makes some really clear-sighted statements about the themes touched on in the video trailer. I especially appreciate the following statement:
"Intelligent and thoughtful young adults who are making choices about raising and educating their children aren’t interested in this broader agenda that seems to have taken over even some of the sounder minds in homeschooling today.....They are running away, indeed, not from homeschooling but from the cult mentality, paradigm pedaling, and homeschool celebrity worship that permeates the “movement.” And many of them are still recovering from open wounds they received at the hands of this movement, wounds that have never healed because parents have refused to repent for worshiping at the altar of the patriocentric paradigm."
