I'm actually torn between They were trapped in another part of the Ark and They came to Earth after the original Ark crew contacted Cybertron. Both are fun explanations to use.

With They were trapped in another part of the Ark, you get to imagine the consequences that would result from being in a section of the ship more heavily damaged that the sections the original 19 were in. And in once instance, I was imagining that they woke up long before the others but were trapped and formed their own little society.

Princess Artemis did good work with the assumption that Perceptor was part of the original crew in her fic Collateral Damage.

On the other hand, with the They arrived later theory, you get to imaging all they've gone through while the Ark's crew was taking their nap. How much they've changed and grown, and how much they've been affected by the increasingly desperate situation on Cybertron. I've had fun picturing Perceptor and Blaster becoming vicious and badass over the vorns whereas before the Ark disappeared, Perceptor was a

I've always liked both the explanation you just gave, that some of the crew needed to be dug out. I also am a little fond of Marvel's version where extra crew members were stored in data crystals. :D

Some good points to support the method particularly this one:

Just clicking around today, reading different posts in different journals, this one caught my interest

The second group being somewhere on board seems to be the easier explanation to deal with.

Each response helps to flesh out the support for the possibility of the second wave of bots being included in the original crew at launch.
