I will keep the absorbency thing in mind. Right now, I have a small pile of PiMP (a Whole Foods next to my apartment carries them, so that's all I've really tried)-does anyone have any firsthand experience with how their absorbency is? I've only been using them during summer vacation and haven't had a major mishap yet. My problem heavy time is really only one day, so all I need is one really good heavy pad and I should be set for the rest of the week.

PIMPs are quite absorbent, I have used mediums all day on a heavy day. The nylon backing certainly helps. They just didn't work for me though. Too slidey and not body conforming enough. I prefer something softer like a homestead emporium :) Homestead Emporium pads are soft, comfy and really absorbent. You could probably even get them made with extra absorbency if you are worried. You can choose between windpro backing or PUL. I used to be so nervous with just fleece, but it works fabulously and I don't have a need for PUL at all!

I'm not sure if this answers your question, but maybe it will be a tiny bit helpful.

I can't totally speak for Party in my Pants, but the things I've heard from others is that they are thin but tend to slide around, due to the backing they use. I would highly recommend Yurtcraft (from Etsy). She has a large selection to choose from as far as absorbency and lengths, and some of them contain PUL. Love her pads. Another seller I'd recommend is County Cloth Creations (Etsy seller too). Smaller selection, ships from Canada, but she does have some with PUL too. Both of these sellers use a type of fleece backing that makes it so they don't slide around.

I really like PIMPs w/ their goretex backing. But the pads I get from other brands do not have waterproof backings at all--just fleece or wool. I like different brands for different reasons. The ones I have bought with PUL I personally hated. But this seems to be a trial and error sort of thing. Some folks find that the "way" they bleed (e.g., super straight down and fast) necessitates PUL; while others with similarly heavy periods do not need it b/c their flow goes to a wider area and absorbs fast.

P.S.--I think the way you flow (straight down or spread out) has something to do with labial shape. And I have no idea why the goretex backing on PiMPS works for me while PUL does not. They are mysteries. I like PIMPs, New Moon Ultras (ultra style only) or elementals, and Go with the Flo. Fussybutt Moonbow has an awesome cut if you don't mind dealing with fussy wool backings.

(Little late here, but...)

Someone above mentioned that a lot of it does depend on absorbency. PIMPs, for instance, use PUL but I have once leaked through mine when I didn't change soon enough on a really heavy day. Mind, this was leaving it in over four hours on my heaviest day with no cup, so it wasn't my brightest move and it was extenuating circumstances, but that or the wicking is something to keep in mind. By contrast, I have yet to leak through my Domino Pads under similar circumstances, and they don't have PUL backing.

Honestly, a lot of it is trial and error, at least for me. Get a few with and without and try them on a weekend/vacation day to see how the brands/makers hold up, and go from there.

Lots of good info! Thanks! Still sorting through stuff, but I feel like there is less guess work involved now. =]
