Oops... my wording wasn't very good, was it? Thanks for the quick reply, and for giving me another reason to convince my mum to stop using washing up liquids tested on animals!
Try and get hold of a small lidded pail or container of some sort which you can carry between your room and the bathroom, and nobody will be the wiser. You can actually both keep, rinse/prewash, soak, and wash&rinse your used pads in it, if you don't feel like having them go in the family laundry. When you remove a pad, you put it in a wetbag in your bag, and from there into your container as soon as you get home, and when you have a few minutes over during the next couple of days, you bring the container to the bathroom to wash the contents.

ugh i remember it too....god we use cloth diapers for my 20 month old and my mom think those are gross..i cant image stay w her and have cloth pads..i still use throw away pads when i have my period. i'm preggo now so i dont have to worry about that now.. leeneh seems to have given you good advise. i hope if you family does find out they will respect you and your privacy..
Thank you for that. :) Your mum sounds a lot like mine. Their loss, really. :P I wish you the best of luck with your pregnancy! (and sorry if leeneh gets several emails for this... I'm a bit new to livejournal so please bear with me xD)
I don't soak my pads, except right before I wash them. I soak for an hour in cold water, then and hour in hot water with natural oxygen bleach added. It gets out pretty much all the stains, even a week after my period. A lot of the all-in-one style pads fold up into neat little bundles after use, which keeps the used side tucked away. You can buy a wet bag on etsy or just use a ziploc bag inside of another bag to carry used pads in. If you can get your mom to start using natural laundry detergent, that will be ideal, and make sure you don't use any fabric softener with pads!
It's awesome that your considering cloth. I find that cloth pads are a lot easier to use in public than disposables. They make less noise and I just fold them up and put them in my wet bag when I'm done with them. Once I get home, I empty my wet bag into my delicate bag that my undies go into to be washed normally in the washer. I don't even usually have to treat them with stain remover. I just take out the delicates bag before I do my last rinse with softener.
Oxygen bleach and baking soda soak helps the most. Dissolve the stuff in a little cup of hot water, then add cold water, soak for an hour or so, and most stains will go away on their own with no other treatment.
