Quote of the Day

For linguistic deprivation to look at all political, as opposed to purely accidental, requires more than that someone benefits from the bias thereby introduced. Deprivation in the political context implies that someone else is responsible for imposing the limitation, for withholding that those deprived are seen as lacking. YES.

Or possibly stabbed them all with a sharp pencil. :'D

Or dropped presses on them. One per head. (See how the well-embalmed Mr. Slant likes them apples, he'll be taking tips from Reg Shoe soon enough!)

It would require quite an elaborate trap to drop presses on all of them. And poor Mr Slant, you know he's only in it for the money.

450 words of elite conspiracy A long list indeed. *snort*

Well, the first hundred words or so were probably things like 'liberty' and 'universal rights', and after that they had to start filling it up with things like 'good table manners' and 'the correct way to address the second cousin of an earl's youngest daughter'. ;)

Please forgive the bit of silliness I have just written below. I found your entry very funny, and thought about an absurdist version:

Some men in funny robes have gathered to compile a list of words only the highest echelons of society are allowed to cuddle up with. But there is such a surplus of lovely words fluttering their eyelashes at them. Who to choose and preserve untainted and untouched by the grubby fingers of The World Out There? And who are the bloody plebs anyway?

The ending is inevitable. They decide that they are the only Sultans of the Harem of Words and that the plebs are everybody outside the walls of the room. And when their wives break the door down they find that their husbands have stopped talking - to make sure all words are kept safely inside.

I love that version! Especially a surplus of lovely words fluttering their eyelashes at them -- wonderful image. Thank you for sharing! :D

Must say I am glad you liked it. I felt rather silly after I had posted it.

Oh no, don't, it wasn't silly at all. Abstraction ad absurdum, yes, but that's not silly in the slightest and it boiled my version right down to the glorious absurdity that I wanted to convey. :D

Well done!!!!! :) :) daoinesidh April 23 2010, 06:22:10 UTC
This had me in stitches ... Lord Rust indeed ... !!! :D You know, I think it's a perfect nick-name for Noam Chomsky ... I mean, I do have great respect for the man and his work, but the way he drones on and on in his linguistic kind of way in interviews, just makes him a perfect Lord Rust!!!

And, I must say that, contrary to what your tag states, you do have a superbly wry sense of humor, my dear ... absolutely delightful!! It really shines here ... I especially love that the 'Convocation' are all wearing those ludicrous hooded robes!! :) :) ... absolute perfection!!!!!! :) :)

Aw, thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed this -- I wasn't sure how funny the joke was, taken outside the context of a day spent reading dry articles on political theory, since that does tend to warp one's perspective. And ridiculous outfits are essential for any conspiracy, it is a well-known fact. ;)

I suspect Chomsky is one of the people I should read up on one of these days. Oh well, maybe after Pocock and Skinner...

Lord Rust burst into the drawing room, looking as panicky as is possible with a nose like a keel(1) and eyes incapable of widening beyond 'lidded', just as Lady Rust was putting away the sherry ( ... )
