Dammit. I think I killed my Osmanthus fragransI was so happy when I found that plant. "YAY, it smells like APRICOTS! *buy*" And the fact that the tag said it was cold hardy to 10 degrees and evergreen just led me to plant it right in the ground next to the house. I didn't even really think too much about it and I certainly didn't go Google its ( Read more... )

awwww! It smelled like apricots??

To be honest, just adding me to your friends list could have killed the thing. I'm not so good with plants, and I think they know it.

Ha! :)

Oh, I don't know, I don't think it was you. I have very strange luck with plants. Things that are supposed to be easy, like mint, I can't grow to save my life, apparently (though I have a new plan for this year that I think might just work).

But things that are supposed to be hard, like Venus Fly Traps and roses and successful hydroponic plants? I can do those without even really trying. I'll cut herbs and put them in water with the intent of using them, then they'll root and start growing like crazy. But then I do something normal like, you know, put them outside in the soil where they'll grow better -- and they die!

I can grow roses like mad, but I can't get my Peony to bloom. I don't get it!

But yes, the Osmanthus has these tiny tiny little white flowers that are KNOCK YOU DOWN fragrant -- and they smell just like apricots! They're so lovely! I also believe that the flowers can be used in tea. :)

Ok, you need to test this flowers used in tea theory because apricot-esque tea made from flowers would be also made of awesome.

I have one mission this year. Well, at least in regards to plants. I want to get a plant, preferably something that requires a nuclear reactor to kill, and keep it alive. For awhile I hope, but I’ll take what I can get.

I think a plant that smells like apricots would be lovely! Especially since you *have* to bring it into the house (oh darn!) Tea you say? Hm…I think I might have to research this plant. Is it very large? Our home doesn’t really allow for large bushy outdoor plants, but I might be able to squeeze in a small one near the door. We live in a fairly moderate, if not rainy as hell, climate, so I’d think if it can stand up to 10 degrees…well, as long as it can survive me it should be fine.

speaking of interesting plants, there's a nursery in CT that sells miracle fruit plants. i'm very, very tempted to get one after reading about this miracle fruit party.
