Penelope was a 17-year-old girl in New Zealand. She was a lovely person. I got acquainted with her on LJ as a result of both of us being libertarians. We had some great conversations. Dear people, I too would have sworn she was genuine, and as clifty_man knows I have been distraught with grief. However, several little niggles which I have been discounting or explaining away actually make me believe now that we have indeed been hoaxed. I have looked at the material sent me. Very, very strange.

I have reviewed my correspondence with Penelope and looked at the photos of her with her family. I can detect no hint of deception. I have two emails from her in September 2011, and I presume that she was still alive but deteriorating at that time. I don't knpw if she's dead, but I assume that the progress of her cancer (brain) makes it almost (or all the way) impossible for her to communicate.

She promised to have "David" let me know when she died, and I haven't heard from him. On the other hand, the communications from David in the material sent me indicate deception. Some is written in a style like Penelope would write, but doesn't really sound like her.

I know that her atlasmustshrug email was hacked, or someone was given access to it. It's possible that someone got access to all her accounts. If I have to say what I believe, then I believe that Penelope's still alive and that someone has been screwing with the people who love her.

Many thanks. Have just sent you a long reply. Putting all that stuff together with what I had, and further research online, I will say publicly here what I said in more detail privately - it's either a hoax or a case of identity theft. There is a Penelope Couper; there is also her classmate who is in the photo above. The person who was on LJ may or may not have been either of them, but if not must at least have been one of their classmates. There are so many lies and discrepancies that I can't avoid the conclusion that we have been deliberately deceived by this person, whoever she is. Also it is fairly clear that she is not going to get in touch with us again and that we will be unable to discover anything further.
