The principle wasn't just portrayed as a raging homophobe -- he was shortly thereafter shown to be a pederast himself, just with a taste in high-school age girls rather than boys. The filmmakers' intent was clearly to make his anger at Hector's actions seem hypocritical (which it was) and (for the purposes of the film) therefore void (which it wasn't). Clearly, the filmmakers felt very threatened by the "pederast teachers are not okay" line of thought.
The film would have been a lot more interesting if it had explored the issues and origins of Hector's inappropriate behavior and the students' acceptance of it, rather than just paeaning for the lost glory days of British schooling.
