Oscar nominations coming up in about twenty minutes. Then I'll be working on (another) catchup linkspam and a Secret Life update, plus trying to get some more actual work done today. And yes, I did hear about the Dakota Fanning/New Moon thing. There'll be ETA(s) in a bit after the nominations are up ( Read more... )

this was me this morning too! Little blurb on CNN that I mostly ignored in favor of blow drying my hair, and the confidence that I'd hear anything important from you!

Hey! on a total side note, my dear husband is in Montgomery until next Friday working on the network for some casino there (he's an engineer, I don't even know), and I was wondering if you or your lovely followers/friends could suggest cool places to eat or go or things to do, he's bored and lonely.

Heck! Poor boy is bored as shit, and stuck there for 2 weeks- I THINK it's Montgomery, but he'll pretty much go anywhere- he is free on weekends, but can't fly home.

I used to live in Montgomery, but there are some cool things to do.

Obviously there is the Civil Rights Memorial and the Rosa Parks Museum downtown, but on a lesser known scale there is the Hank Williams Museum down there as well.

But there is also the Alabama Shakespeare Festival as well as the Montgomery Fine Arts Museum, which aren't bad.

There are a ton of good BBQ places down there, although the names are slipping my mind. It's been a couple of years since I lived there. Not much shopping wise other than the usual fare.

I think Montgomery has a tourism website, it might be worth a google search.

My only piece of advice is to not do much sightseeing after dark, it gets pretty hairy even in the good parts of town.

I've been to the Shakespeare theater there and it's quite nice.

If he has time to do any driving, he could check out the space museum in Huntsville or go to Birmingham.

U.S. Space and Rocket Center! in Huntsville! Home of the last real Saturn V! Approximately a 3-hour drive, and there are other museums and stuff to see in Huntsville too.

I moved from Montgomery last year. Honestly, there's not that much to do around there, but there are a few good places to eat ( ... )

I spend every Christmas there! scornedsaint January 22 2009, 22:24:09 UTC
Go to Capitol Books! It's amazing little local bookstore in the Cloverfield area, near Huntington College (also located next to F Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald's Montgomery home!) If he wants to get a book for the plane ride back, he should get it there.

The Southern Poverty Law Center has a great museum about Civil Rights. Not the most happy-go-lucky of trips, but still very interesting and moving.

I'm less helpful with food, although I'm sure my grandmother and aunt would love to cook for your husband.

Have him take a weekend at the beach down in Gulf Shores. It's less than a 4 hour drive from Montgomery, and it's really lovely down there. I haven't been in Jan before, but even in bad weather in October it was nice. Lots of little seafood restaurants and great burgers at Sea 'n' Suds, and just north of there, in Foley, there's a Lambert's cafe (amazing place, they throw rolls to you across the room) and a great outlet mall.
