Eleven?! That doesn't sound, at first look, like the kind of thing you usually see where the student was an active and willing participant. And honestly, it takes a sick kind of person to do something like that. I sometimes wonder why teachers who sleep with their students aren't as stigmatized as male pedophiles--it's the same thing, really, but the women always get a lot more sympathy. Just--augh! I know, it's horrible! And the really sad thing is how often there are these reports of a teacher sleeping with a student, usually a female teacher. Last spring, a [male] teacher at my school was arrested for having sex with a [14-year-old] student, and most people's first comments, on hearing about it, were "Oh, gosh, yeah, the same thing happened at my cousin's brother's best-friend's school." As if it were so usual that it didn't matter how many people were being hurt by it.

Now, at my high school, the football coach was fired for having sex with the eighteen-year-old student body president. Not criminal because she is eighteen, but an obvious breach of the teacher-student relationship. The coach (as well as the girl) were both completely shamed and humiliated even though it was "legal." But I get the feeling that if a guy was sleeping with his female teacher, his buddies would have applauded it, and the teacher would probably get sympathy, because it seems that women teachers are never fully responsible.

Some would say it's because it's every teenaged male's fantasy to score with a teacher. But for crying out loud, couldn't she just date a young looking 21 year old?
