"It's making an awful noise" (why, is it people?).

Well it is NOW. I think the problem was that it was NOT people until Tobias restung it.

Oh my god, this episode. I was really impressed with the music- the super threatening low sustained tones during all the scenes with Tobias, even if I did have to pause it while I laughed my head off over the "I wouldn't do that to the food" line. Like, Hannibal is so mater of fact about that, while Tobias is genuinely like, "....whaaaaaat just happened there?"

Poor Franklyn. He just wanted to be loved. It's not his fault he never had a chance to learn how to find a friend he didn't have to pay for. That said, the purturbed "I was looking forward to that" from Tobias was gold.

I was thinking like, "because it's people screaming?" but then, I was getting a little loopy after pushing to get this done a day early. (Possibly going to see Star Trek tomorrow, didn't want to cross the streams.)

I also really liked that moment when Tobias was talking about following Lecter and "what I saw you do--and do well." That was just so... brrrrr.

Hugh Dancy pretending to play a guy's throat was way more beautiful than it had any right to be.

Those tones. Ridiculous. I suppose "Well played, Bryan Fuller" is too obvious, but.... well played.

I'm endlessly fascinated by Hannibal's loose, monogomish relationship to ethics. I mean, yes, he has them when they suit his purposes, but figuring out what those purposes are is like, a psych book right there.

I'm sure his purposes make perfect sense to him, lol, even if it looks like he's ethically all over the place to us. He's all "that would be unethical" about this thing, and then engineers horrible situations while doing that thing.

You come for the therapy, you stay for the baroque historical trivia.
Yes, just... YES.

Also, I was upset about the office being demolished. I was like, "Noooo! Kick his ass, Hannibal, but don't ruin the pretty office." I have issues with the office and his kitchen. I love his kitchen and the appliances, but somehow I feel I should be more creeped out by his kitchen given what we all know ... BUT IT'S SO PRETTY.

I tend to believe Hannibal was somehow responsible regarding Bedelia's patient. But after watching the episode, I found myself wanting more... let me cry and throw a fit until we get the whole story. I agree, I'd like to see how that whole thing went down ( ... )

Yes, Will is /his/ friend - his only one really *laughs* - and that was definitely the vibe I got there.

And yes, yes Mads is wearing knee pads, I loved it!

As for King Arthur - that's one reason this show made me squee so much when I first heard about it, I was thrilled to see these two together again. That's pretty much the reason Mads won out over David Tennant to be Hannibal - they liked that Mads and Hugh already had a friendship outside of the show, and therefore had that chemistry they could bring to it.

I'm glad I'm not the only one haha!

It's weird, because right before the show started, I had this "Mads Marathon" (IDEK) and watched a bunch of his movies and thought, "Huh, this guy is really good. I shall now watch whatever he's in and cheer!" And then of course, I heard he was playing Hannibal and my thoughts went a little wonky... "Wait, Hannibal... can I cheer for him as Hannibal? Do I feel as though those are big shoes to fill or do I wipe the slate clean because this is earlier in Hannibal's life/career/eating... hm..." And then of course, after the first episode, "OF COURSE I CAN CHEER FOR MADS AS HANNIBAL! Yay peoplefood... or foodpeople... or wait, this seems wrong."

Oh I didn't know David Tennant was up for the spot (my friend will be very sad to hear this... she loves him) but I agree with their decision. It makes sense in my mind, too XD Although I have to say, it was weird for me to see Mads clean shaven (I had a "bearded-and-gruff-Mads" movie marathon on my last movie marathon day) haha!

For me, Mads will always be Tristan first (though hannibal is changing that) because that's where I first saw him - as Tristan. So there's that soft spot for me for that whole rugged look. It doesn't hurt that he's always reminded me a bit of Viggo Mortensen (*fangirl squee for a moment*).

When I first heard about the casting I was totally on board... especially since they weren't simply doing an actor playing Anthony Hopkins playing Hannibal. I actually saw some reviews criticizing Mads (the heathens!) and people had to point out that he's actually playing him a bit more closely to the books than Hopkins did (which is not a criticism of Hopkins at all, just that no one should have wanted or expected Mads to attempt to play him in the same manner - down that path always lies destruction).

And yup - though I cannot in any world get my head around David as Hannibal...then again, I heard about this after the show started; so frankly now I can't imagine /anyone/ but Mads playing this particular incarnation of Hannibal.

Did you get the feeling towards the end of the fight that Hannibal had the entire thing under control? He shoved the ladder down to where it needed to be, he created an appropriate mess for the Investigators Three to pick over, and when that was all done he laid Tobias out in two seconds flat.

After the last episode, I was half expecting Hannibal to be grooming Franklyn towards a serial killership of his own. In the books, how many of his former patients started up their own practice? At least two?

So it needed to look like a pitched battle, not an easy one, in order to be convincing (because even as it was, Jack was all *brow raise* about it ( ... )

I think it was a little bit of both--he seemed to be struggling there for a while, but using the handkerchief and tipping the stand over made me think he was trying to put an "oops!" spin on the end of the fight. (It just fell on him! It just fell on him ten times!) Except that then he told Crawford he killed Tobias (self-defense, of course), so I don't know why he was trying to arrange the scene like that. But yeah, someone who nearly got his ass beat but then takes the time to get out his handkerchief before finishing off his enemy--he had it under control by that point, if nothing else.

He definitely had it back under control by the end; I'd even argue that he never fully wasn't under control - even if he wasn't stringing Tobias along. I can't imagine Hannibal imagining a scenario where he didn't come out on top. I'm not sure that option is even hardwired into his coding.

In the same respect, I can't imagine him ever considering calling it anything but self defense. It was already established (through Will) that his patient had told him about Tobias, as Will followed that lead. So, Tobias being there when Franklyn is...actually makes a lot of sense to me, if Tobias was going after him and feared he had shared anything with his shrink.

Maybe that just makes Jack better at this than I would be heh

Will driving an hour in the snow to talk to Hannibal about his girl problems made me bust out laughing. Going to Hannibal Lecter for relationship advice. Priceless.

Why does no one think to get Will to a hospital for a head scan? Hopefully Alana brings it up next episode. I think Will finding out he has a tumor would almost be good news for him in a way?? Like, ‘ YES, I’m not crazy, I just have a brain tumor!’

That fight scene was so awesome! Usually I am dead silent when watching shows but during this scene I was yelling "Kill him! KILL HIM!". I wonder if they are going to show more of the aftermath of Lecter killing Tobias. I would have loved to see Will empathing the fight scene and trying to make sense of how everything went down.

So much on this episode was priceless.

I've wondered that myself - I think Hannibal knows something is up (sensitive smeller after all) but as for the others...it would be very easy to simply accept that his behaviour is a further manifestation of the path that using his "gift" leads him down... If he wasn't having the headaches, most of us would probably assume that as well.

The fight scene ...so... amazing. Though I don't think we'll see a need for Will to empath that scene (as awesome as it would be). There's no reason for it, since it's not "unsolved". I didn't actually take Jack's skepticism as him thinking Hannibal was up to something, but more that it just seemed weird on the face of it. I imagine we'll deal more with the aftermath, but not in a looking at Hannibal closely kind of way.

Over dessert, no less. Oh, BOYS.

Over dessert, no less. Oh, BOYS.

To call that dessert is such an understatement. Over edible art is more accurate *laughs*

The fight scene though... I was just...floored by how that went down. It was just primal and epic!

I am so annoyed that I didn't like it, but someone on Tumblr did an excellent gifset comparing Will's empathing of Dr. Gizzard (I think? Looked like the nurse death) to Hannibal's serial killer off in this episode. The end blow fight choreography is really interestingly similar--throat strike, smash with blunt object, VICTORY. (Though as Tumblr has also been pointing out, Will did not "kill" with symbolism ah ah ha SHOOOW)

Show that I actually don't watch--I don't think I could, even with all the gorgeous, because FOOD IS PEOPLE--but I've been enjoying it vicariously through these recaps. And I really appreciate the pace they've been coming out, too; I know that's gotta be rough a'times, especially with blarghing and such, so I just wanted to salute you for all your effort. And your awesome Tweets, too. MAY YOU NOT HAVE TO RAIN FIRE AND BRIMSTONE UPON NBC

(Part of me, cynically, wonders if NBC is draaawing this whole thing out because it works fans into a fever pitch and gets other people interested, EatTheRude campaign and all.)
