Alana Isn't There..... ext_1799984 May 19 2013, 04:10:09 UTC
Love your recaps! My fave moment of the episode (if I had to pick - GAH so many wonderful things) was when Hannibal told "I am feeling unstable methinks wobbly wobbly" Will to go interview Tobias....*loved* Will's reaction which I felt was very "oh, I *told* you I'm unstable, basically begging for a doctor's note to get out of this shit and you PULLED ME BACK IN MAFIA STYLES". So good. Love your interpretation of why Hannibal did that (the Bedelia walls-test) but it's still a bit confusing. Totally saw Hannibal jealous that Will and Tobias had a song, great call there.

Okay - BUT! - does anyone else wonder if Alana was there at the house at all?!?! I'm just not convinced that whole "I just thought I'd drop by" thing was real.....maybe she's a hallucination too....?

I actually made a similar comment about Alana in my comment below, though it was more referencing someone else who had posited that. I think it's definitely possible, but I don't think it's probable.

It's pointed out that her dropping by is "out of character" but I'd actually disagree. He had already called her up all crazy like to help find the imaginary injured dog, she's dropped by before when Abigail woke up. It's totally in character for her, despite the not being alone in a room thing, to show up to check on him after all the crazy making behaviour he's displaying. She's worried, has always been worried about him, and (to me at least) obviously /into/ him since the very first episode.

She may not think he's too broken to date in general, but despite liking him, she definitely think he's too broken for /her/ to date.

Hm. It's possible she wasn't really there, but I tend to think (for no provable reason) that she was. I mean, she does liiiiike him. And she may have been getting kind of concerned after he called her to wander around a field looking for an animal that clearly wasn't there.

Exactly - that's why (like you, no provable reason other than hope) I think she was actually there. For me, at least, stopping by on someone I care about who is obviously taking a trip towards crazy town isn't all that strange a concept.

I stumbled upon your reviews (I don't even remember how now) and I've read through them all and was avidly awaiting the review for this one because I knew it would just be gold. These reviews are such a delightful addition to the episode itself. This was my favourite episode (Though I keep saying this after each episode, which is a good sign in a show) and I could not wait to see what you had to say about it ( ... )

Thank you!

My explanation for the "middle of the night" thing is that it gets dark really early in the winter, and we did see snow falling? I mean, apparently Will took a hammer to his wall, Alana dropped by after work, and then Will drove an hour and was still at Lecter's in time for dinner?

I think the jealousy is almost as much over Will as it is over Alana

I do kind of think at this point that if he were forced to choose between them, like at gunpoint or something, he'd choose Will. I'm actually really interested by that in more than a binary friends/lovers way, yeah. It doesn't have to be a black and white choice between het fic and slash fic, so to speak. It reminds me of the really intense "romantic" female friendships you'd see in the Victorian culture/literature that weren't actually sexual. Or even the way male friendship was the end-all be-all in the classical era.

I actually said something similar above about the timing. The "middle of the night" was assumption a lot of us made due to it being dark - but as you said, in the winter, there's a whole lotta dark. Even allowing for the thing with Tobias being a "late dinner" it still wouldn't be /that/ late. Will certainly would have eyebrow raised higher if it were 3am and Hannibal was sitting down to a meal with someone ( ... )

It was very much "you took something of mine, I'm taking something of yours".

Especially the LOOK he gives Tobias right after that.

I really do think in a twisted way - Hannibal is trying to /help/ Will (while also mercilessly fucking with his head) in his own way and that he does actually like and care for him, again in his own way

It's like kids who pull on pigtails, but the fancy cannibal version, lol. Hannibal doesn't know any other way to engage with people besides fucking with them.

To me, Bedelia's "I don't feel responsible for his death," sounded a LOT like "But I do hold YOU responsible, dude." But I might be reading into it.

Yeah, and he looked pretty pleased with himself, if that was what it meant.

I actually had this moment where I was like HE IS YOUR SHRINK FRIEND JUST TELL HIM before I realized I was referring to the Worst At Helping.

I almost kind of thought Will didn't want to tell him because of that episode way back (like, #2?) where Lecter was like, "Oh, if you didn't see Hobbs that time then it was never about him anyway." Like, Will's afraid he'll "disappoint" him, almost, that he's regressed in some way?

Also, cellos and other instruments in the violin family have to be held together with hot hide glue, an animal glue

*facepalm*

Fortunately, Will has His Hands at the Level of His Eyes and is able to prevent the Phantom of the Orchestra from choking his face off

I did kind of start imagining a POTO AU where the Phantom's actually a really creative serial killer (but also in 19th century Paris). I'm sure someone's probably already written that.

Doesn't even need too much changing, considering he has the Mirrored Torture and Death Chamber in the basement (at least during the novel, did they add it back into the Weber movie? I think I heard they might've.) And doesn't he do something with little animal tokens in the novel? I'd have to check. All that would be left is the presentation of the bodies, or wearing their faces as masks, or some other special crazy.

Wasn't he already a serial killer with the hangings? It's been awhile since I've read the book.

This, right here:

then Lecter throws Tobias against his desk and just STRAIGHT-UP FLYING-SQUIRREL TACKLES HIM

I had to stop reading for a moment until I could get my laughter under control... because...so much yes.

Hey, I'm just transcribing what happened, because SERIOUSLY. That entire scene was just--something else.

But you just...transcribe it so wonderfully! The flying squirrel thing just sent me into the biggest gigglefit either.

That whole scene of their fight was a true pleasure to watch. I'm a /huge/ Mads fan from way back, so getting to watch him do that was just...amazing. It was very apparent in that scene that he had dancer training. It's also why he was getting his ass handed to him a few times. He was more for stealth and evasion and Tobias was going more for the "Rawr! I beat you!" approach.

Seriously though - when fandoms collide, loved Tobias' actor in Supernatural, so I get all kinds of squees seeing him.

I will help you riot against NBC if this gets cancelled.

I was promised David Tennant. I require that I get this on the show!
