OSCAR NOMINATIONS OMG

Jan 24, 2012 11:06

@christylemire: Greetings from the Academy. It's Hollywood's biggest morning. We are all very glamorous. And jacked up on caffeine.

@ropeofsilicon: Hugo leads the pack with 11 nominations followed by The Artist with 10.

Oh god, I hated Martha Marcy May Marlene, despite being a John Hawkes devotee. I'm glad that of this entire clusterfuck (THE HELP? THE HELP? WHAT THE HELL? And also, I cannot STAND Jonathan Safran Foer.) that movie got nothing.

Since I've seen, you know, none of the movies nominated at all, those are the only opinions I will espouse on this.

It sounds like The Help is this year's The Blind Side. Except at least the focus isn't on the white actress this time.

I am thrilled to see Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer get some well-deserved recognition, but I really wish it wasn't for such stereotypical and pigeonholed roles.

This. Exactly this.

Viola Davis was absolutely amazing in Doubt. (And dear god how was that movie out in 2008? TIME IS COMPRESSING ON ME.)

I am outraged that Alan Rickman did not get a nod for Harry Potter (possibly with or without a Dragon tattoo).

OUTRAGED.

Yeah, a lot of people are angry about that, I'm hearing. I don't think the Academy's ever taken Harry Potter seriously, though--I kind of suspected this was going to happen.

I too am outraged and yet like you, I am not surprised. However, I do believe there is hope still for Mr. Rickman, in his next majorly accredited role, he is certain to win for his entire body of work, you know how older actors often win because they haven't won yet. You know what I mean. It's like the Oscar voters finally go, "What? Whatshisname hasn't won yet? He was awesome in BlahBlahBlah. [that other film that came out years ago.] Let's vote for him now!"

Bridesmaids is pretty funny. Basically, the character Megan steals the entire show. So hard. There are some good moments aside from her, but she is the best.

I saw a preview for Extremely Loud And Incredibly Close and I was overcome with disgust. I really hate overt emotional manipulation in movies (e.g. cheaply referencing major human disasters to get the audience to feel sad) and this is a movie that is entirely cheap emotional manipulation.

See, because... yeah. I saw the EL&IC preview and was just... ugh. I feel bad just outright saying, "This looks terrible and I will never see it," because any opinions or "facts" I feel tempted to spout after that will have no basis in reality. But... well. I'll just point out what critics who did see it have said. I'm sure there are positive reviews somewhere, but I have not come across them.

Also, the flipbook of the jumper in reverse that was apparently in the book. I can't even.

I had to find a copy of the book and see that for myself because I couldn't believe it. It's there. I saw the pictures and did not flip and put it right back on the store's shelf.

Wait, that's an ACTUAL THING?

Buh.

(I will never, ever, see EL&IC. It looks as mechanically manipulative as FUCK, and that particular day in history is one I do NOT like to revisit for any reason at any time.)

I've seen almost nothing with a nomination (of any kind), so I can't really talk about it. Like you, though, I find the whole spectacle more amusing than worthy of outrage. The Oscars are just a super-glamourous Best Widget Salesman competition, and Hollywood is the most profoundly bourgeois industry there is. If you try to take any of it seriously you'll just give yourself a headache. It's much more fun to use the awards themselves as pure entertainment, not as any actual measure of quality.

(I... I don't want to see that movie.)

I think I would, actually. Or at least read the fanfic which transposed Lisbeth et al into the Wizarding World. It's not like it doesn't have plenty of messed up characters and backstory to set things up.

(Disclaimer that I have recently been reading Auror case-fic stuff, which means I am currently finding conspiracies, serial killers and wizards an easy fit.)

I was thinking more of Harry Potter in Really Unpleasant Scenes. Do not want.

Okay, that can go in the Do Not Want file.

I'll stick with my idea which I like better.
