I suspect the Academy realized they might not have too many more opportunities to throw awards at Max Von Sydow, so they're pulling the trigger now. And I love Max Von Sydow and his awesome name, so I can't complain too much even through I don't want to be a theater next to one playing Incredibly Loud, let alone pay money to see it myself. (Got me why it's up for best picture. They probably saw Tom Hanks and just assumed.)
As a side note, when I saw the trailer for that during J. Edgar the crowd actually started booing the screen. The only trailer I've ever seen get a more negative reaction was when M. Night's name came up during Devil.
(My mother paused on her way out the door and started watching the announcements. "Christopher Plummer is going to win," she announced, and serenely went on her way.) Your mom is so cool.
I'm rather apathetic about this entire awards season, TBH, because I haven't seen 99% of these movies yet, and am totally over awards-show writing. The most shocking thing to me is Extemely Loud being nominated, because I have yet to hear one single good thing about it.
