Feeling particularly low today. Got a phone call first thing this morning informing me that I didn't get the volunteer coordinator position

OK - It sucks to be super smart and a do-er and unable to find a job. You really do have my total sympathy. Sometimes I forget to say stuff like that

I've been at a loss regarding this for a long time - I came back to the US in December, and have gotten only a single call back from any of the jobs I've applied to. Knowing that I've applied for hundreds, getting a single interview for a part time position has been devastating

I'm also a good teacher if I don't have to evaluate much past needed competencies. I'm decent at training and I don't mind talking in front of people so long as I know what I'm talking about -- and there were times in China where I was asked to give a speech to 500 people with no notice and not having any idea what I was talking about, and that is Not Pleasant (tm). I'm a good cheerleader and motivator

You're not qualified for these, but freelancing opportunities might come in related areas with great opportunities not far down the road. I am not recommending any of these for you, just some thoughts to get your box more appropriately scaled for your excellence.
Finally, with your political and moral inclinations, it's probably appropriate to mention that the health care changes create an environement where small expertise now will pay off very quickly as you become part of the application of the new rules.
More thoughts but I get dumb at the end of the day and I get shy all the time if I pay attention. I have more for you and if I don't get back to you before Monday bug me about it until I respond. In case I don't 'fess up, I keep office hours Sun - Thurs and would be happy to talk with you, just 'cause I have so enjoyed your blog.
Also, ADD is the inverse of inattentional blindness and, given your level of cultural success (limits admitted), you might reconsider. IB is a cultural (nose to the grind stone) requirement but it sounds like you're effective on spotting the systems windows invisible to others. THAT's a talent that's money in the bank if you can get it into a form that people can understand it -- people can't buy what they can't conceptualize/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inattentional_blindness
I'm not particularly talented at writing much of anything -- I'm more of a functional writer than an interesting one, which is why I've been trying to write more recently. I think academia ruined me. Either way, I've been writing book reviews to kill time recently, and to hope I could manage to score some early review books (yay books

Aww...it's not that you suck, Amanda. It's that you're probably overqualified. Seriously. With the economy here being what it is, most places, even volunteer opportunities, are getting more apps than ever before and they are overwhelmed so they're trying to stay away from people who might be seen as even slightly overqualified. Sucks, but that's what it is. I've encountered it myself and it IS definitely discouraging. :(
As for the ADD...I can totally relate. lol Hyperfocus rocks sometimes, but the rest of it can really kick you in the ass. Ugh....
You're good at teaching...are you good with, as my friend calls them, "small humans" (i.e., kids)? :) If so, you might want to look into subbing next school year. Works really well around going to college...if you want more info, please let me know. :) It's not full-time by any means, but it's better than nothing at all, if you enjoy that type of thing.

If the idea of starting your own thing is too much, take a glance at solo gig. http://www.sologig.com/Default.aspx
