I haven't been reading any fic for the last two weeks and probably won't be reading much for the next several as I try to work on my ficathon entry, but I would like some fresh material for when I'm ready to plunge back in ( Read more... )

If you haven't already worked your way through it, I suggest checking out All About Spike. Many of the authors there have moved on to other fandoms and you may or may not recognize them. However, the site mod was very picky about what she would accept and only well-written fics can be found there - regardless of pairing or rating. I suspect you could find much to your taste.

All About Spike was one of the first places I sifted through when I first was introduced to fandom in... 2003? Wow. Long time ago. There were definately many wonderful fics there. Could bear checking out again. But what I'm really interested in are active authors that I'm just not terribly familiar with. There are so many good writers out there that one never gets to because they run in a different circle, write a different pairing than your usual, or whatever. I want to give 'em a fair shake if I can.

K, in case you don't know them - girlpire and shadowscast

I love girlpire. I discovered her work last winter. She's one of those writers I aspire to be like.

Is shadowscast the one that wrote "Sockpuppet?" That was a great fic. I would definately check out more of her work.

I don't know if you ever hanker for Spike/Fred fics, but if so, here's where you can find links to a whole heap of them:

Cool! Thanks for the link. I haven't read many Spike/Fred fics, but I do enjoy the idea of them. They could be so sweet to each other. I imagine, like so many Spara fics, they would bring out the best in one another.

How did you make your way over here, btw? I don't think you're on my flist! Much appreciated though :D

You're welcome! petzipellepingo mentioned your request in her "More Links Than a Bag of Sausages" report, and I saw it there:

You're right; Spike/Fred has the wonderful sweetness of Spike/Tara (with a quarter-cup of goofiness thrown in. *g*)

I'd suggest dampersnspoons, she has both light and deep stories (and yes, I was drawn to her for the smut, but I stayed for the characterization.

I don't know if you read AU, and I know this is kind of self-pimping (kind of... pfft, it's blatant and shameless), but I am one chapter short of finishing Mixing Business with Fanfic, so if you really run out of recs you could give it a shot.

Seriously, though, ignore my batting eyelashes, feel free to not read it. :-D

Does dampersnspoons only write AU/AH? I don't tend to read it, but if there's a specific angsty fic you think would be my speed, I'll take a peek.

Hey, self-pimping is all good. I do it, too!

Thanks for the recs, hun. The end of the month is fast approaching. I hope you'll consider gracing us with a Sotia-as-BtVS character pic :D

She writes mostly AU/AH, but her Something Real was angsty and her WIP, The Buthcer, to read which you'll have to friend her, was too angsty for me to read before she finishes it. Oh, oh, and Only Time Will Tell is canon-ish!!

And I'm hoping to manage to get a pic to you on time... just have to find my 80's skirts :-P

Her A Chance in Hell is canon-ish too, as is her rewrite of season 6 which title escapes me at the moment... *sigh*

Thanks for throwing some links out there. I don't generally read Spike/Xander, but I'm open to giving the fic a look-see. I have also heard good things about Liz Marcs, but have never read anything by her. Now I have an excuse.

Oh, yeah, Liz is good. I've been working my way through some of her long (like, epic-long) fics, but of her shorter stuff, Cuckoo in the Nest was a good one, as was Walking Higher - The Childhood's End Remix, which I recced on my LJ a while ago. (She wrote a nice meta on that fic, which you might enjoy.) She also has another fic called Into the Desert, which caused a lot of controversy on my LJ, lol.

well. you know i fangirl femmenerd like whoa. she doesn't write much fic these days (grad school eating her up), and when she does it's not usually jossverse, but.

this ficlet, which is faith/tyra (my fav friday night lights girlie) i love. i read and loved it before i had ever seen fnl, so you could do the same. heart heart heart to slashy faith.

this one is faith/dean (from spn), faith/ofc, is so, so, so hot and well written. again, you don't have to have seen supernatural (i never have) to get it. oh, fuck. yum.

i maybe have told you about this before. it's one of my all-time favs. buffy/sam (from spn). again with the hot.

tkp (more fangirling by pass) wrote the fic that is maybe my all-time fav bangel fic, and it's here. even if you've read it before, it might inspire your iwry fic (it has a similar tone to the one i think you're going for.) it's about 3,000 words.

this shot, by kita0610 (again with the fangirling), is so wrenching and beautiful. spike and buffy and angel in many combinations. again, not sure if i've ever sent you there before ( ... )

Ooooh, Kita. Yes. She's been on my to-read-list for awhile now. I started reading a Faith/Angel by her before and the style was just perfect. I'm definately going to check her out.

Thanks for all the recs. You totally know what I like. Plus Faith. *drool*

BTW you shouldn't totally read the Dawn/Xander fic I wrote. I've written a few new pairings (Wes/Lilah, Fred/Gunn), but I think that one will resonate. It's got Pass grit. Lots of emotional stuff going on.

Also, I think I have a good first line for Bangel. Got a little momentum going since we emailed earlier. Here it is:

Now. Go now. The words run together like a three car pile up, each successive thought ramming into the next until they’re just a mound of like shrapnel that she can’t see over or around.

This is when she's upstairs getting her shit together to leave. I decided that Dawn is going to come up and they're going to have words before Buff takes off.

p.s. here is a redbrickrose fic from the 2006 iwry which i quite like. it has b/a, and also angel/nina. it's stylistically very beautiful, and also clever, as is typical for redbrickrose. (sigh. i fangirl once again.)
