The Visitation was mine and I wasn't terribly impressed with the story, which I was ultimately okay with because it gave me the mental space to focus on the four new characters I had to get to know.
I just realized that maybe Five has a sort of Indiana Jones relationship with that hat. He never loses it. :D
Monarchs ego made Sixes look like a pebble. I quite loved this serial, but I was disappointed in Adric for a moment. When I saw him agreeing with Monarch, I thought he was bluffing. You know, like in State of Decay. Though I hadn't seen that serial yet, it seemed like something Adric would do.
When Five was all serious or smiling, I think that was one of the times where we really saw the previous Doctors, even if it was unintentional. (I haven't seen the serial in a bit, so I don't know it was. All I know is this was the first serial that they filmed and produced. I really need to see it again.)
I had a lot of fun watching this. The space walk he had, really bad. I don't think that's how a space walk would look, ever. *laughs*
I'm jealous of Tegan's drawing skills too. I haven't been able to draw like that in years. :'(
Space helmets. *laughs*
There's just some much I can say for this, but I really can't think of it all right now. It was one of my first serials.
I think Monarch's ego puts every other ego ever to shame. And I think it's safe to say that Adric was the official Morality Boomerang of this story. No matter how many times he erred on the side of fail, he always came back. *hugtiem
( ... )
Adric did come back, which makes me happy. But this was to me the beginning of the end. This is where they start writing him wrong. (Which is really sad.) I want to hug him too.
I guess he mind was still recovering, in less obvious ways.
I find this story very watchable. I love it.
I'm a little naive at times and I try not to read about the actors themselves till I have seen EVERYTHING from the show.(Davison was an exception. That's because I've seen him in Campion. Netflix strikes again.) I didn't know about that. I admire him for that now.
Adric-hugtiem art is far overdue. Dammit, I did it for Bertie Wooster when the situation called for it, why can't I do this now...oh wait...class...(I really really do want to do this, though) I was just talking to my friend who lent me Black Orchid and mentions of Earthshock brought out a cry of "I LOVED HIM SO MUCH" from her.
I know what you mean, but I don't think I could hold off until after I'd seen ALL of them. Still, it can have its detriments. Notice how my last few Tom Baker commentaries have had some talk of the stories about his backstage behavior.
So I'm not the only one who found Adric rather out-of-character int this one. Of course, I found Tegan OOC in Earthshock, so make of that what you will.
I did, catch a glance of a comment on behind-the-scenes behavior, but I skipped over it quickly. I generally prefer not to know about the personal behavior of actors or any sort of performers, really. I'm interested in what they have to say about their own characters/perfomrances, but that's it. Anything else (even regarding other characters on the same show or whatnot), I do not care about. And I certainly don't want to know which ones are ill-behaved IRL. I care about characters, not actors. Hope the actors don't blame me for that. Same goes for music and singers' personal lives. If it makes it any better, I don't want to know about the behavior of the people who wrote the programs I use for my computer every day, either.
Oh, I don't blame you for tweeting it. If it's your thing, go for it. Lots of people absolutely love the behind-the-scenes stuff. As for me - I actually dvr-ed and fast forwarded through all the behind the scenes clips shown in the commercial break for the fifth season on BBC America. Rather make up my own mind than hear the opinions of actors/writers/producers and be swayed beforehand. I don't even want to know opinions for new stuff. For older stuff it's okay, because I've watched it a dozen times and am less likely to subconsciously watch it looking for what they are saying or whatever.
Mostly what I remember about this story is Persuasion, and Monarch shouting his name so he would go do the heavy lifting. Monarch: "Persuasion!" *Persuasion bolts off to kick some butt*
I never hated Adric. And I was never of the "companions should die" school, either. I'm old fashioned that way.
Who was it that said that Davison wasn't allowed to put the arm around, anyhow? I never even heard of that until you mentioned it.
If this was the worst Adric had to offer, I still don't completely see why he's so widely hated. Good on you, mate. *shakes hand*
Most of the nods I've read about the attempt at a more chaste era of the show were from TV Tropes, which of course isn't the most wholly accurate of sources, but then I heard it from Petey himself (from about 2:00-2:25).
I have lots of problems with Five stories. It took me some time untill I could enjoy his serials, he is not my favorite Doctors but he had some good stories along with some really really bad ones. Four to Doomsday is quite good but I don't understand what they're trying to do with Adric at that time. I liked him in E-Space triology but he lost his potential in the following season. he, Romana, Four and k9 were totally a happy family, at least in screenIt's a shame that only after Nyssa's departure and Adric's death that Five got some good scripts. (although Black Orchid and Visitation are between my favorites, but that's because Nyssa is awesome in both of them XD)
Now that I've seen Adric/Baker and Adric/Davison stories in close proximity, I'm beginning to see the difference. Somehow I wonder how he would've turned out if Tegan hadn't been introduced (or introduced later, because I love her relationships with Nyssa and Turlough) and he'd had a less crowded TARDIS to work in. Most of his bitching in season 19 seems to come from frustration at being excluded.
I've found I have a strangely high tolerance for most mediocre Classic stories, but I do recognize the really good ones when I see them.

I think I mentioned in my Meglos commentary that I plan to start trying to keep a better leash on Tweets about the actors.
