And why should parishioners do penance for the sins of their priests anyway? If that is what he is, in fact, saying? hmmmph

I'm not sure I understand your point about the church critics and "the dictatorship of conformity". I don't think he's accusing them of breaking the law, just of doing whats trendy. And I think there probably is an element of that for some people, TBH. I don't think he was arguing that the church is a democracy, just that going along with the majority simply because they're the majority isn't really democracy either.

Your last paragraph reads as though you think belief in god and understanding the basics of modern medicine are mutually exclusive. What does one's belief or otherwise in God have to do wth whether you use public or private healthcare? I believe in evolution but I still do the dishes - the two aren't connected. Likewise believing in god isn't connected to which doctor you see. I'm assuming I'm missing something or reading it wrongly.

I can relate to a lot of things that you say in here and I've be en meaning to write my own entry about it. I used to be very active and strong in my beliefs (I was raised Catholic), but since I've been in college, I've had many experiences/discussions that have opened my mind and I really have become apathetic to it all. John and I got married in a church, but that was mainly for our families since they are so so traditional. We were able to customize the service so it wasn't all bible-thumping, so that was good. Anyway, every day I am trying to sort out my feelings for what has become of my opinion on religion. I not only agree with you that it is a dangerous thing, but it's also such a selfish thing! "God help ME, pray for ME!' blah.
