I wouldn't say that I loved the alternate reality aspect - TBH I feel like they cheated a bit. On the other hand, I appreciate the freedom it gives them, for this movie and in the future if necessary, and there always have been alternate realities/universes in Star Trek so, all in all, I'm fine with it. And I actually enjoyed the movie, which was a nice surprise.
*nods* Since they went there, I'm glad they've decided to built a Spock/Uhura relationship rather than a Kirk/Uhura one.
I wouldn't have minded if they had used McCoy and Uhura a bit more, but it seems logical that they focused on Kirk and Spock. And all things considered, Uhura probably got more time screen than in most episodes of the original series.
That was a really cute car moment that *almost* made up for some of the bigger lapses. :) And this scene put a grin on my face, too: When Alex informed Michael in a hushed voice about Sara's whereabouts the General remarked something like "Do you boys want a little private time?" Hehehe...
I haven't seen Star Trek yet, but we Germans have the same problem with different pronouns. It sometimes feels like a harsh break when characters suddenly change from formal to familiar - and I suppose the dilemma with the translation is even bigger when the move is dubbed, as it's mostly done here. As far as I remember in the classic ST series all characters used the formal "Sie", except Kirk and McCoy talked on the familiar "Du" basis. I can imagine in the new movie they're starting off with familiar rather than formal because they are so much younger, but... let's see.
I'm not a huge fan of Mahone - to put it midly - but I agree with you, the scene you mention *was* cute.
Movies are usually dubbed here too (or at least, a dubbed version is available), but oddly, the theater only played the sub-titled version, which is totally fine by me.
I won't tell more since you haven't seen it yet but indeed, using a more familiar way to address each other made more sense. It's just that it threw me off a bit because, well... habits :-p
OMG, this is completely late but when I saw the Big Red Ball of DOOM, I also thought Alias! What is it with big balls of doom being Red? So weird. Anywho, I'm so glad to read that you're a Trekkie like I am! I felt kinda weird about writing any Trek fanfic because I wasn't certain if anyone on my flist would even notice it if I posted but since you loved the movie...Yes! We can squee together about the wonderful AU'ness of it all.
PS. I'm not going to even comment on the PB because I think (yeah, I know) I just can't take anymore. I'm currently living in denial-land and it's a very comfy place. I think I'll stay. ;)
Yep I am a Trekkie ;) I used to be totally all over it in an obsessive way. I'm not that smitten with it anymore, but I'm still very fond of it
