I'm not as orgasmically thrilled about the new design as some of the people on the boards seem to be, but these are definitely an improvement. The generic minion/guard in the upper left still looks particularly silly. If they redesign all of the enemy groups with this sort of update aesthetic in mind, then I half-expect to see 12-foot tall Council/Column Minions with laser chainguns for arms (and yes, I know just how ridiculous 'laser chaingun' sounds, that's my point).
Now, compared to the round 1 redesign, these are a 'knock out of the park,' as several people seem to enjoy putting it. But I have yet to see anything that I'd personally consider a drastic improvement over the original costume designs. (Although I offer a disclaimer: my computer sucks so my graphics settings are almost never cranked up to the highest levels so I might be missing things by not comparing the originals to some of the newer character designs side-by-side)
Really the old CoT wasn't bad looking even on great graphics. I think what they wanted to do was improve a bit on them with the glow and new fabric textures they have. I think it's a bit of a drastic change but if they're going to change it, better this, than what they had. I DO like these.
Because the Circle models are old and, while great in concept, ugly compared to the other, newer ones, and for a group that's encountered 1-54, too. Further, they want to make as many of those pieces available to players as possible, which means, no more hacks with the old robes.
All these years, I'm yet to figure out why they hate the leg-concealing robes, and insist on short skirts or those weird cutaway skirts/robes for everybody. Not once have I seen a Thorn or Tsoo or Lich or Carnie do anything in a long robe and thought "That's hideous. They've got to fix that. And, by all that's good, keep players from ever doing it."
Because those same robes start screwing up something major once hooked up to the wide angle of motions that players do. The most common stated reason is Martial Arts. The fact the robe's hem stretches from inches to feet is easy enough to miss on a Sorcerer who doesn't move around much, but not if you see your character do a Dragon Tail every twelve seconds.
I actually quite like these (though I'm not entirely sure I'm fond of the neon pink glowy belt-buckle (?) thing on the bottom four costumes. And the hats are a little silly. But they're pretty fun!
Though now I'm picturing the Death Mages cringing a little bit every time they have to try to look imposing and dangerous in their fuschia spikey robes... ;)
