When a toon stops being fun

Jun 23, 2008 16:10

I encountered CoH last year when I went to attend my brother's wedding in March. I saw him play this and I was immediately hooked. While I was there, I made a toon using his account (a fire/dark corruptor for what it's worth) and solo'd it to 22 ( Read more... )

Why do you have to delete him? Just leave him on the account and don't play him. Nothing says you have to delete a toon you're not using. Maybe at some future point you'll want to play him again and he'll be there. By the same token, don't feel you *have* to play him if he exists. There's nothing wrong with leaving him "in the bin".

I've used up all my slots on Champion, and to get more I either have to delete a toon, or wait till I finish my first year. :)

(And I usually delete toons I don't like playing.)

Expand to another server. You're an LJer. You can find people playing characters everywhere, you're not stuck in one server.

Well, if you really feel like keeping him, and you don't want to play on other servers, pay to transfer him to a server you don't use. That way he'd still be in storage, but it would free up a slot on Champion.

I have the same problem with my first hero, a dark/dark def lvl 44.

She was fun to start with, but now I much prefer melee toons.

I just leave her where she is. I cant delete her because she is involved in some storylines in my SG.

My first character, a lvl 49 Emp/Dark defender, I have no idea why I suddenly became dreadfully bored of her at the home stretch, I was having fun at the old Hamidon raids and I adore empathy despite all the healer hate out there but somewhere along the way teaming got terribly boring, so many out door missions and wandering through the cramped CoT tunnels. At this level, all the classes were pretty much coming into themselves and I felt like my buffs didn't really make a difference at all (throw a kin in there and I was just plain bored to death). So I discovered controllers and while I still love empathy as a set I just... haven't felt the desire to play empathy again at all. One day I'll get around to transferring all the inf off her and deleting her because I'm pretty certain I'll never really play her again.

Do an STF and you will feel wanted again. ;)

Oh? Why is that?

I have to say that I agree with him. My Emp/Dark suffered much the same fate as yours, but for me it hit around 35 when I lost my duoing partner to that other game. I did the teaming grind and got her to 50, because she deserved it, but I haven't played her much since then. The few times I have felt really needed were on Hami Raids and the STF. Debuffs were important there but with all the damage and mez those AV's lay down, there was just no substitute for Clear Mind and good old fashioned healing.

Do you have Hasten? If you don't it's probably worth respeccing and giving a build with a alotted-up Hasten in it a try, so you have Build-Up, Aim and your nuke up more often.

Maybe slot the Snipe with interrupt reduction and try to use it more as a regular attack? Have no idea whether that would work.

Running Assault doesn't give you a whole lot more damage, 10% on a Blaster I think, but it might be worth a try.

it has been my experience that hasten on a blaster usually means no end a lot more often. Blasters already run through end really fast as is.

You can use the snipe as a regular attack more frequently, BUT even with a few interrupt reductions, it still takes as much time to use as 2 or 3 other attacks would. Snipes work best as a distance attack, especially if you can kill in one blow while stealthed.

Unfortunately, the bonus that you get from running any of the tactics pool on a blaster is quickly negated by the massive end drain your blaster suffers for running them. (WOW is that amazing... I had it on other ATs and did not notice a major drain once I slotted them with End Reduction, but the blaster... yeah... too much end loss already, it became PAINFUL very fast).

so really good thoughts, but my experience is that they don't really pan out well. :\

the best bet I have found is to slot well with I/Os. It's expensive as all hell, but wow is it worth it.

I agree with all of this. I tried Hasten and Leadership on my Energy/Energy blaster and just couldn't get them to work no matter what I did. I think I've used more respecs on that level 35 blaster than on my four 50's put together.

I've hit on a build that I like now, but it's still not one I just love to play. I've gotten spoiled with corruptors, whose buff/debuff secondary just makes them so much more fun and survivable in PvE. That said, my strategy with my blaster is to pick the juiciest target (e.g. the one with the most mez, the comm officer, whatever) and boost range+power boost+aim+build up then snipe it dead. That's usually followed by Power Burst, Explosive Blast, and the tier two attack (I forgot the name). After that it's up close and personal for Bone Smasher. Stun to control anything pesky.

I don't know much about the electric secondary, but I'm sure that the op could work out something similar to this.

It took a lot of work to get there, but my higher Energy blaster is actually so much fun to play that I find myself leveling at an insane rate. I am not specifically TRYING to get levels on her (except when I am close, and there is some sort of prize dangling for that level - like I have the stuff to be slotted waiting or a power I am really excited about). I just *enjoy* playing her a LOT.

My lower energy blaster is just not so much fun. My plan is to respec her out of her current pools and into more useful ones.

If you want a list of what I have slotted on her energy powers, let me know and I will make a list later today for you. But yeah... she kicks major butt. My smaller one has never been as mighty as the bigger one

If you could, that would really be awesome. I appreciate it. I have a freespec or two left that I can use. Right now, I've got energy bolt, blast, torrent, explosive blast, aim, build-up, nova, and the snipe. Except for torrent, all are 3-slotted for damage, 1 acc, and I put a recharge redux slot in a couple of them. Torrent is slotted only for accuracy and KB. I use it as my "get away from me!" power.

Sounds like typical, solid post-ED slotting. You might be able to squeeze a little more out if you look into IO sets and bonuses. Don't kill yourself trying to get/afford purples, but you can get some nice synergies from even the cheaper sets.

Power Bolt - 5 slotted with Entropic Chaos (right now I have chance to heal self, Acc/Dmg, Dmg/Rech in it)

Power Blast - currently 5 slotted, will be 6, with Devastation (I have all but Acc/Dmg and Acc/Dmg/Rech)

Energy Torrent - 6 slotted with Detonation (I have all 6)

Sniper Blast - 6 slotted with Executioners Contract (I have all 6)

Power Burst - 3 slotted with Salvo (I have all 3)

Aim - 2 slotted (while be 3) with To Hit Buff I/Os

Explosive Blast - 4 slotted with Positron's Blast (I have 2 - Dmg/Rech and Dmg/Rng. I will be picking up Acc/Dmg, Acc/Dmg/End, and eventually Chance for Energy Damage because extra damage sounds fun)

Nova - currently 5 slotted, but will be 6 with Scirocco's Dervish (I have 3 now, Dmg/End, Dmg/Rech, and Acc/Rech ( ... )
