I guess this chapter really shows perfectly the main dilemma. The free person in me desperately wants Neal to rebel; to fight against his circumstances in any way possible, because it is slavery, and it is horrifying, and just because Peter sometimes isn't a total jerk about it doesn't make it right. But at the same time, in this universe, Neal doesn't have a better option, and he is pragmatic enough to make the most of it. If he fights this, he can't win - his dignity will be taken from him anyway; at best, he can make Peter somewhat miserable, but it will cost him - and for what, when he can't succeed, when he's only fighting for himself ( ... )

It is a really dark situation for Neal to be in, and yeah, he really doesn't have any good options. And it's awkward because on the one hand, slavery is normalized in this AU and a lot of people take it for granted and, like Peter, don't see it as particularly degrading for the slaves. But on the other hand, it's a punishment and Neal knows that on some level, it is intended to be degrading and enough people see it that way. So Peter's reassurance is cold comfort.
I'm glad you find the series interesting, at least, even if it's not a "love" type of series for you.

I love the subtle way you deal with the myriad issues. And how Neal keeps his snark, and Peter still seems like Peter even though he's so different morally. And your Keller voice is awesome!
Also. "Neal squirmed"... I somehow love any fic that has that phrase in :D Squirmy Neal is good.

I agree with you about squirmy Neal.
