I hate latex

Well, I was told that I need to pick a different career path. Evidently, because of my slight latex allergy I am unsuitable for nursing. I can't even bring my own latex-free gloves to clinicals. It's depressing, since I've been working at the various prereqs for a year now, and I really wanted to go into nursing. Something about helping people ( Read more... )

Who told you that? You might want to get a second opinion. Lots of the NMU nursing instructors see it as their god-given duty to thin the ranks, but a latex allergy is certainly something that can be accomadated. If they continue being nasty about it, you might want to talk with whatever office handles accomadation for the various handicapped. If they can dumb down programs and provide tutors, watered down tests, etc, till the retarded can get a college degree, they can certainly make a note that you need latex free gloves. The various laws say they HAVE to make any and all REASONABLE accomadations for people's handicaps and individualities. A latex allergy shouldn't be a cause of discrimination.

I had some of those same people try to get me out of the program, mostly because I was a guy. Only two men went through that program in the time I was there. The other one was a minority, so they HAD to leave him alone. I ended up getting disgusted with their attitude and going to Bay.

I talked to the director of the program and offered to supply my own gloves, but was still told that I should look into something else. I was also thinking about going to disability services, and if I wanted to make an issue of it, I might. I have one bad semester on record and the semester deletion policy doesn't apply to me because I went to a community college last year before coming back here, so my grades aren't up to par at this time anyway. Bay is an option I may consider down the road. At this point, I just don't feel I have the time to wait however long the wait list is at various institutions for admittance to the nursing program. I'm looking at three year waits for NMU, Bay and NMC. Maybe if I can find a place that admits more than 40 students a year, I'll consider it. Now I can just get this degree and work in a medical office doing billing and records.
Better go study for a class I no longer need to further my education.
