questions part 2: the lightning round!

I'm going to be obnoxious and post a bunch of questions again! Someday these answers will amount to something I can actually contribute, I swear. ^^

So! Full of questions, are we? )

I think anything we know about Uldred is speculation. We know he's powerful enough that he's sent off to Ostagar, and he has the Bald of Evil going on, so he's *probably* anywhere between 40-60 years old. (It's also implied a bit that the reason that Uldred is so good about ferreting out blood mages is that he's one himself. Come to think of it, maybe he used "I'll turn you in" as a leash to keep his students in line ( ... )

oooh thank you so much! I am like an information glutton OM NOM NOM so very tasty :D I wasn't sure if there was a canon age for the PC but it seems like 17-18 might even fit all the origins. Ok, and like every RPG EVAR. xD

There has to be a reason that the PC is best friends with him, though. Yeah--It's kind of fun to imagine their past together, but whenever I have to extrapolate things I'm afraid of getting NPCs "OOC" :P

I'm excited to check out your fic and see how you handled it--thank you for sharing! ^^

I will warn you that Old Roads has some non-canon bits in the setting, and those bits resonate through the whole thing. You will probably know them when you see them, though. :) (I swear I started out writing a one-shot...)

Oh, yes, and the link is to a chapter in the middle of the third of four novellas/novels. So if nothing makes sense, head to the series start. :)

oh WOW you have an incredibly in-depth world going on here; I think you're right; I will have to start from the beginning--what I've read so far is just amazing!
... but awww poor Jowan sure didn't get the reception I imagined heh heh

I'm pretty sure spells are weaker without your staff: try unequipping it and see :)

I thought Irving was your mentor? Or did I imagine that?

hahaha! good point.

and yeah, we *did* seem to have a special relationship of some kind with Irving--I don't know why I didn't draw that conclusion myself lol, good catch. Unfortunately, my in-game PC is a lot different than the one I am writing, so Irving is not on her buddy list. It does seem strange that he would seem almost to have invested in you and yet other mages would have no idea who you are (come on--everyone knows the teacher's pet). And then Wynne...didn't he ever mention you to her over a glass of that Tranquil-brewed beer?

Although, that kind of answers one of my questions: if the HEAD OF THE CIRCLE has time to be interested in you/watch your progress, then why not another of the senior enchanters? :3

thanks! ^^

After Awakening (when you are the Hero of Ferelden plus plausibly Queen/King/a Paragon etc) I no longer am surprised by people not recognising/acknowledging characters the way they should :/

awww yeah. :( The Couslands got a taste of that in Origins, I think. I mean, I know you're *technically* a titleless GW but C'MON ACKNOWLEDGE MY NEAR-ROYALTY, PEASANTS & NOBLES I HAVE MET BEFORE >:P

Ok, some of them did, but if I want to flounce around having people bow to me left and right (or at least stutter a little in awe), it is my prerogative. I haven't played through a Queen/Cousland in Awakenings yet, but I can't imagine how much MORE disappointing that would be. D:

On Jowan becoming a companion: Jowan would probably have leapt at the chance to join, annoyed the hell out of the PC with sob stories and a guilt-laden conscience, then flung himself at the Archdemon while sobbing about "poor Lily." (Guess who's not a Jowan fan? >.>) He's a complete coward, but I think even he would jump at the abstract eventuality of helping (Oh, we're fighting a Blight? Cool. I can totally handle a Blight. It's just a few darkspawn and a dragon thing and I can stay behind you, right?) versus the concrete, immediate opportunity to help in Redcliffe (Umm... those corspe things that just creepily groped me through the bars? They're smelly and dirty. I'll stay here, you know, where I'm safe.)

On the grounds thing: I assume they'd have to practice at least SOME spells outside. Inferno, Tempest, Blizzard, Earthquake, Walking Bomb, Virulent Walking Bomb, Fireball, and Death Cloud, off the top of of my head, would be very dangerous/damaging to perform in doors, and could potentially be life-threatening and likely not too ( ... )

mmm mages are a delicious addiction, aren't they? I can't get away from them (literally: had to use the "Adopted" mod to try out the other origins HAHA ( ... )

Heh, I know what you mean. I only really enjoy the mage and sword and shielders as far as combat goes. I started an Awakenings Orlesian Warden that's a two-hander, just to get a feel for it. I may have to give in and try a dual-wielder. I have a Dalish archer in Origins, but I can't really get into him. Even as a mage, I was all "let's run into the middle of that big group of hurlocks, woohoo!" *is not the most strategic player when it comes to DA ( ... )

And the Chantry doesn't seemed entirely opposed to mages participating in needed services (such as killing the darkspawn, healing arls) so long as their babysat by Templars.

I really wanted to set that Revered Mother on fire at that Ostagar battle meeting when she shot down Uldred for suggesting that the mages actually contribute. That combined with the lack of a mage cutscene in the battle made me wonder how much they actually got to do. ):

That battle was a freaking mess though.

Yeah so maybe I get way too into the game hehe--but you're right--that combined with the comms is like, crack.

yay for crack xD

On the leaving thing,

I always figured there was a garden of sorts out around the tower, but going out that front-door was a big no-no since it lead to the ferry. I just sort of ignore the fact that there really aren't any other doors and pretend that there are some back doors of sorts which lead to an enclosed garden or something.

we also have to take into account in Awakenings there was that mage collecting herbs and stuff by herself. So I'm assuming the most trustworthy mages were allowed on errands.

Somehow I got the impression that even the goody-goody mages had escorts when they left the tower, so that did seem kinda strange! Thanks, I forgot about that haha. But then of course there's you--and Wynne--they seem to make exceptions for... although the current climate of upheaval hardly seems the sort that would lend itself to lessening protective measures... maybe they were actually learning something from the Broken Circle incident?

Which honestly does not fit at all with my view of templars and the Chantry and the Circle, so I'm just more confused. I think I'm trying too hard to make them the "bad guys" so I just can't get past weird things that contradict that. >_>

haha!! that seems like an excellent thought.

I really really want to know if that's possible, I love the idea. And it would make sense with the "tower grounds" line you tell Duncan. Although I've written my fic so far like she hasn't stepped outside since she got there.

I'm pretty sure they let the tranquil out to gather herbs, at least. ;D
