P.S, I love you (The film, not YOU specifically) Contains Spoilers

Feb 27, 2012 19:39

Hello All, Sorry I don't review often but unlike Xim, Yearrgsworth, and Zu, I end up watching a LOT more Television than movies. So until we decide to start doing T.V. shows as well, you will only hear from me the rare occasions I watch a movie instead of a T.V. series.

This time it was the Gerald Butler and Hilary Swank film 'P.S. I love you' from 2007 )

gerald butler, p.s. i love you, hilary swank, romance, tear-jerker

You are a far better person than I, I loathed all of those films. Just thinking of PS I Love You gives me hives.

Note that I used that term "kinda enjoyed" (drinking scotch helped). LOL. The only film I actually LIKED in there was 'Time Travelers Wife'. Maybe because I am a sucker for anything dealing with time travel. You know, because of the reviews and trailers they were putting out, I ASSUMED I would love "The Fountain" but what a pile of crap, time-waster that was!! I am not a fan of the 'romance' genre although I love "When Harry met Sally" and "Amelie". I like quirky romance. I know that all four of us (me, X, Y, and Z) name "Annie Hall" in our list of 100 fave films. Now -that's a great romance movie.

I enjoyed PS mostly for the Gerard Butler and the Jeffrey Dean Morgan of it, the rest was fairly blah, but then, I called The Lake House after 20 minutes and was tortured by how long it took to get to the point.

I don't do chick flicks, and if I do, they need to be far more exceptional, or at least far more honest about relationships than most ever get. Love Actually and He's Just Not That Into You (for Ginnifer Goodwin and Justin Long) are my exceptions to the contemporary romcom.

I also love films like "But I'm a cheerleader" and of course "Brokeback Mountain". The think I liked most about the ladder is it Ang Lee treated it like any other love story. No humor, no joke, just two star crossed lovers in love but destined to be apart. That film makes me cry at the end, and I'm not embarrassed to admit it. Then again, I also think "Harold and Maude" is one of the most romantic films ever (X and Z introduced me to that one) so what I find beautiful, most find odd.

My all time fave romance is actually Shadowlands, which features the love story of C.S. Lewis and Joy Gresham, who met later on in life, and she died of cancer not long after they fell in love. Its incredibly moving, and a testament to Anthony Hopkins skill that he played a romantic lead that's that much older than most.

This movie has inspired my single favorite sentence from any movie review ever which is from the AV Club stating that Gerard Butler is the only dead character that should be served with a restraining order.

I really liked that movie for the fraught and ultimately bittersweet relationship with the mother ... and was that the one where Harry Connick Jr is the guy at the pub that everyone's expecting her to hook up with and then they have that super awkward kiss? I really loved the little twist of that.

I'm pretty sure the only movie I love Gerard Butler in is Reign Of Fire but then I'm the only person I know who loves that movie. *lol* And Jeffrey Dean Morgan only makes me wince every time I see him.

As for PS I Love You, it made me want to go back to Truly Madly Deeply for comparison purposes. And it got me picking me up one of Cecelia Ahern's books which has catapulted me into severe love and admiration for her writing. I have the newest one sitting by my bookshelf, just waiting for me to pick it up. :p Eventually, I may get around to picking up the book for PS I Love You, mainly to see how Americanised the movie was and how the original material may have differed ( ... )

Let us know how the book is, for comparison's sake. Would love to know!

Hilariously enough, I absolutely LOVE romance novels but GOD I hate romantic chick flicks! Probably because I tend to gravitate more towards period and fantasy romance as opposed to modern day boy meets girl style ...and if I do like the modern day romances they have to be really quirky. The movie Killers comes to mind. I was shocked how much I enjoyed that one. I tend to love my romances more along the lines of Shaun of the Dead. There's always something cliche (and in some ways insulting) to me about a good chunk of the average romantic chick flicks that I tend to steer away.

I tried watching PS, I love you and had to turn it off. WAY too much Shmultz for my taste. Though the eye candy that is Gerard Buttler kept my interest for a brief moment.

I agree. The romance I turn to is either bizarre in some way or period pieces/classics.

As for the Shmultz in 'P.S. I love you', so much could have been done with that idea. I for one plan on doing something similar when my time draws near. But instead of coming of romantic and thoughtful, it came off preachy and creepy -SHRUGS-

Oh well, unto the next one.
