play it loud

As I watched The Advantage run through endless covers of music from the 8-bit era, I realized that something was...off. Not the band--their skills and slavish devotion rendered every theme song they touched equal parts faithful, epic, and rockin'. Not the Railway, either--even though it was packed and probably not the best place for this show. Hell ( Read more... )

It would take fovever to describe every detail of how amazingly awesome it was the time I saw The Advantage, but at the venue they rigged up an NES to a projector then suspended a pair of controllers from the ceiling, so anyone could walk up and play a few levels from Megaman 3 between sets. When The Advantage were on stage, someone spun the projector around and zoomed it out, so the introduction from Blaster Master was projected 20 ft. high behind them.

Wow...

See, at the railway club (a venue approximately the size and shape of a railway car, give or take--probably take--a few metres), there was nothing like that. It didn't help that due to my chronic lack of height, I couldn't see nothin'. Sigh...

I'm envious of your experience.

Where do I even start? The Advantage is just ridiculously, ridiculously awesome. I saw them back on Nov 04 at Richard's and honestly I can't even compare the shows, mostly b/c my brain isn't powerful enough to contain that much awesomeness at one time. I didn't think it got better than Double Dragon II - Story/Boss or Ninja Gaiden - Min Shaft, but somehow Batman - Stage 1 does it.

The good news is that they said the show is to be continued.

I took some photos btw:

Hey! I think I'm in one of those photos! Number thirteen--the bit of hair at the bottom right-hand corner most likely belongs to me.

I know they're awesome--it's just that I wasn't feeling it that night, you know? But I will be there for the continuation.

I totally know what you mean.

Did we talk at all? Do you have black-rimmed glasses? I'm this guy:

I don't believe we talked...I have dark blue-rimmed glasses, not to mention a blue winter coat and hair that refuses to stay kempt.

Say, were you by chance part of the group in the booth in the back right of the performance area?
